Two changes were made to last Saturday's defeat away to West Brom. Ade Akinbiyi was unfortunate to miss out after some good performances being replaced by Andrew Cole. Kyle Lafferty returned from suspension replaceing injured Chris McCann. It was Burnley who started the game brightly. Wade Elliott had the best chance although his effort was easily saved after good work from the winger. Colchester were unlucky not to take the lead after 20 minutes. Platt's effort beat Jensen but thankfully for the Clarets not the post. Burnley however did take the lead on 23 minutes. A defensive error gifted Cole an opportunity and the striker finished calmly for his first goal on his first full debut for Burnley. Colchester reacted quickly to the goal replacing Lisbie with Vernon and changing formation going with two up front. After 38 minutes Colchester did get a deserved equaliser. A free kick was awarded 25 yards out and Jackson's effort took a wicked deflection passed a helpless Jensen. Burnley almost regained the lead just two minutes later, unfortunately Blake's free kick hit the post.
The second half continued as the first with Burnley failing to break down a very resolute Colchester defence. Kyle Lafferty saw an effort easily saved by U's keeper Gerken and Akinbiyi had a late penalty claim denied. Overall a very disappointing performance and result but the performances of man-of-the-match Andrew Cole and youngster Mark Randall (right) will give fans optimism for upcoming matches. Managers Comments: Burnley manager Owen Coyle: "Colchester don't want to give up their Championship status and we weren't allowed to get a head of steam up" "Having said that we didn't play well enough in the first half. We got in front and looked comfortable, but we never pushed on when we was looking to build on it" "I thought the second half was better. But it's been frustrating". Colchester manager Williams: “Once again, the lads have come off the pitch disappointed that they have not won the game,”
