Burnley were quick to add to their squad and on 4th January Stanislav Varga, a defender with Sunderland signed on a month's loan.
Varga impressed at the heart of the defence starting with his debut at home versus Arsenal and has proved to be a good addition to the squad, which ultimately led to manager Coyle extending his contract until the end of the season. The next incoming player was veteran forward Andy Cole on the 29th January. Cole, the Premierships second all time leading goalscorer, should give plenty of experience to the forward line and hopefully help to improve the young strikers within the club. Cole also was signed on loan for the remainder of the season. The final player to join the Clarets was eighteen year old Mark Randall from Arsenal who signed on deadline day. The young midfielder has progressed well with Arsenal Reserves and like Varga and Cole also signed on loan until the end of the season. Only one player left the club during the transfer window. Andy Gray the Clarets leading goalscorer joined Charlton Athletic for a fee which could net Burnley £2 million. Many names were mentioned as possible signings. Forward Derek Riordan at Celtic was the subject to a bid of £400,000 from Burnley although that was refused as Celtic wanted nearer their valuation of £1 million. One final bid was made late on deadline day but again that was turned down. Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Glenn Whelan was another player who the Clarets made a bid. Again £400,000 was believed to be the amount but Stoke City matched Wednesday's valuation of £500,000 and Whelan was off to the Potteries. Another target was left sided midfielder Barry Robson although again Burnley's bid of £800,000 fell short of Dundee United's asking price and he eventually joined Celtic on deadline day for £1 million.
One player who was heavily rumoured to be Turf Moor bound was former Claret Alan Lee. A £900,000 bid was believed to have secured the services of the forward but that all seemed wide of the mark as Lee did not want the move and Ipswich Town denied reports of any bids made. One ambitious loan signing Owen Coyle tried to make was Argentinian Marcelo Carrusca. The £5 million rated left winger seemed keen on a move to Burnley although negotiations stalled at his present club Galatasary and the deal was ended. There was also plenty of rumours involving players leaving the club. Kyle Lafferty was subject to a large bid from Celtic but Burnley held firm to keep hold of the young forward and refused. Rangers were then also rumoured to be interested but Coyle denied any bids from the current leaders of the SPL. Others mentioned as leaving were Blake to Derby and Unsworth to Preston but neither turned out to be anything but rumours. Winger Steve Jones was close to joining his former club Crewe Alexandra on loan but due to the loss of Gray and lack of left sided players he remains with the Clarets. So the window has closed but we won't have to wait long for fresh rumours to start. The loan window opens next week and it all starts again.
