Blake's 7 - Burnley 2 Scunthorpe United 0
By TheLongside.co.uk January 26 2008
Goals from Robbie Blake, 9 minutes, and Ade Akinbiyi, 32 minutes, gave Burnley a comfortable and deserved three points at Turf Moor against Scunthorpe United. The 2-0 victory moves Burnley to seventh in the table just one point behind both Charlton Athletic and Crystal Palace.

Burnley never looked likely to get any less than the three points after Blake grabbed his seventh league goal of the season.

Scunthorpe forward Martin Paterson did threaten seeing his effort hit the post but Akinbiyi scoring his seventh in all competitions made sure all three points stayed with Burnley.

Teams:

Burnley - Jensen, Alexander, Varga, Unsworth, Harley, Elliott, O'Connor, Gudjonsson (Spicer 77), McCann, Blake (G. O'Connor 89), Akinbiyi (Caldwell 90).

Subs not used: Jordan, Kiraly

Scunthorpe - Murphy, Hobbs, Butler, Martis, Williams, Sparrow, Cork, McCann, Morris (Hayes 46), Paterson (Forte (65), May (Goodwin 46).

Subs not used: Hirst, Lewis.

Attendance: 14,516

Transfer News

Andy Gray has now completed his move to Charlton Athletic for an initial £1.5 million.

"Now it's done, I'm just looking forward to it. It's great to finally be a permanent Charlton player." claimed Gray earlier this week.

No signings have yet been made since the Varga loan deal although many names refuse to disappear.

Derek Riordan's agent has been saying he would be keen to talk to the Clarets while Robson, Lee and Whelan are still rumoured to be wanted by Owen Coyle.

With only a few days remaining of the transfer window Burnley fans won't have long to wait to find out if any signings are to be made.

A final mention has to be given to Michael Duff who seems to be making a great comeback from his injury and could be set to return to the first team within a month.

Really good performance today, should have been more(although they did have their moments in the 1st half).

Nothing to fear in this division and i honestly believe we can challenge for promotion(automatic that is) and not just settle for the play-offs.

Scunny sounded very poor. Never thought they would score. Did Jenson have a save to make?

They hit the post from about 30 yards and Jensen spilled one in the first half but fortunately got away with it. They were dire in the second.

Blake mom? Sounded to have a good game but so did Elliott and Harley. McCann sounded very quiet.

Thought they all played well, McCann continues to be the anonymous weak link but no real complaints today about the rest of the side.

It's great to hear the whole team played well.
It seems we do have a fairly decent settled side, but I hope we can still get 2 or 3 more in soon because we aren't quite there yet & injuries/suspensions can mean the difference between play-offs & just missing out.

I am very pleased with the win and the Blake Elliott combination in the first half was first class.Unsworth and to a lesser extent Varga quickly readjusted their positioning after being skinned early on after which they were solid. We played the ball too much in the air and the second half was Cotterball. It is glaringly obvious what we need. If we had a forward who could bring the ball under control whilst moving forward between defenders todays result would have been a rout.Players due to return from injury and suspension will solve some of the problems. The bottom line is we won, again.Well done to everyone.
