Varga Signs on Loan

Burnley have added to their defence in the form of a loan signing ahead of the Arsenal game by adding Sunderland defender Stanislav Varga to the squad following comments made by manager Owen Coyle following the 3-0 defeat to Blackpool on Tuesday afternoon at Bloomfield Road. The Slovakian is eligible to play on Sunday.

Varga who joined the Mackems for £650,000 in 2000 has joined the Clarets on an initial one month loan.

varga_030108_aHis first appearance for Sunderland was in a 1-0 win over Arsenal where he was named Man of the Match. He'll be hoping his first game for the Clarets against the Gunners will see a similar performance and scoreline.

The 6 foot five Slovakian has been capped for his national side 54 times, scoring two goals in his international career.

During his career since 2000 he has spent time at Celtic before returning to the Stadium of Light in 2006.

Varga has a reputation of being good in the air in both attacking and densive roles and is able to pass with great accuracy over large distances. Some have said he is slow and has his age against him although his height could play an important part in Burnley's defense.

Clarets boss, Owen Coyle, told BurnleyFC.com:

"I'm delighted to get Varga in on loan.

"I have known him for years, both from when I played against him and during my time as a coach and manager.

"In the light of our injuries and suspensions, he will bring a physical presence to the backline.

"I'm sure he will compliment the squad and have a big impact on the team."

Thank goodness its only a loan looking at his age I would have been disapointed if we had signed him for the reported 2 years

Where are all the other players we were promised, surely there's more to come. Great player in his day, but getting on a bit now (in footballing terms I mean).

For such a big guy who aint played much for months, I was impressed with him today.
He can't track back so quick, but he doesn't let much come through him.
He actually made a couple of tackles on the deck too.
A proper full backs performance...solid.
