Yesterday, Maradona, FA president Julio Grondona and national team trainer José Pekerman held a meeting in which they reached an agreement on Maradona’s incorporation to the national team staff. Hours after the meeting, Grondona announced that Diego had formally became part of the Argentine team.
Grondona stated:
“The official confirmation will be done in a press conference held after the friendly matches against England and Qatar.”
“It is practically done; the only things missing are some contract issues he [Maradona] has to solve.”
“Diego has a much better reasoning capacity than he used to have in his best days and working together with Pekerman is not impossible.”
“He has got a life formed inside the national team and he would do anything for the team.”
“Diego showed an inalterable respect for José Pekerman.”
In addition to this, Maradona emphasized the idea that he is not coming to take anybody’s position, that the president and the coaching staff fully deserve his respect and he wants to help in any way.
Still, many doubts arise when trying to guess which will be his formal role in the team, as Maradona also expressed his desire to have influence over the call-ups.
