Music Star Lenny Kravitz used to sing ‘it ain’t over till it’s over’. Well, that’s how most Spanish teams feel about the transfer window closing on Wednesday 31 August night. Few of them have truly stated that their squad is closed, and even fewer are certain that it will remain that way.
While some teams are rounding up negotiations that have been carrying on for some time, others hit the media with surprise signings. The latest transfer news are these:
Real Madrid is very close to seal the signing of Sevilla young defender Sergio Ramos, the fee is between 25 and 27 million euros. The 19-year-old may be the best prospect of a defender in Spain, and Real have been trying to land him since early in the summer, but an agreement between the clubs has only been reached now.
The international player had stated he would be fulfilling a dream in signing for Madrid. His transfer is secured now after Owen’s move to Newcastle, that brought new funds to Madrid and will be used to finance this operation. Meanwhile, Miguel Portillo was loaned out to Belgian side Brugge.
Now, Sevilla are back into the player search to keep strengthening the squad and replace the young star. Duda, one of Málaga’s Brazilians, and Diego Lugano, the Uruguayan defender that has been linked with Real Madrid too, are the main names that are being heard.
Diego Milito, the Argentine striker that led his team Genoa to winning Serie B, but then suffered relegation after being found guilty of corruption in order to secure the promotion, has finally arrived at Zaragoza. The Spanish team got a loan for two years with an option to buy him for 1.5 million euros. The striker will play with his brother, Gabriel, and with another new signing, midfielder Albert Celades, who has played for both Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Betis will try to lure Brazilian striker Borges somehow, since the clock keeps ticking. The deal would be a loan for half a million euros, plus an option for a full transfer for 1.5 million euros.
But the most active teams are those fighting for relegation and consolidation. They keep bringing players and none of them dare to say they will withdraw for the transfer market.
Mallorca have loaned in Greek striker Lampros Choutos from Inter. Getafe have landed Argentine ‘keeper Franco Costanzo for a fee of almost 1 million euros, and he was handed a 4-year contract, with an option for a further year extension. Celta de Vigo is close to loan Ajax starlet Daniel de Ridder. And Cádiz is looking for an attacking midfielder.
