Rennes after Finnish goalkeeper
By EuropeanFootballNews.co.uk May 15 2007 French club Stade Rennais have turned their attention to young Finnish goalkeeper Niki Mäenpää in their quest for a new number one. Mäenpää has enjoyed an impressive spell at Dutch First Division side Den Bosch this season replacing former PSV player Gino Coutinho as the number one at s'-Hertogenbosch.
Rennes coach was watching Mäenpää on Den Bosch's 1-0 victory over VVV last Saturday and was very impressed. Rennes are now expected to approach Den Bosch with a transfer offer during the summer. Mäenpää himself, who has settled in well in the Netherlands, is unsure of a transfer to France, having had difficulties adjusting to the lifestyle on his spell at Lens a couple of years ago. The 22-year-old is said to prefer playing in the Dutch topflight, but should Den Bosch fail to clinch a promotion to Eredivisie, the lure of the club that has a reputation of developing young keepers might prove to be too strong. Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech and Manchester City keeper Andreas Isaksson are the two main examples of Rennes' goalkeeper production line.
Mäenpää started his career at Finnish club HJK, but moved to Lens' youth academy as a teenager. He made it to the bench at Lens, but never got a chance to play for the first team. A move to Den Bosch proved to be a successful one as he proved to be one of the best goalkeepers in the division and alerted the interest of Rennes, among others. Rennes coach Pierre Dréossi plans Mäenpää to replace current number one Simon Pouplin. Mäenpää has featured in Finnish national team camps, but is yet to make his full debut, with Bolton keeper Jussi Jääskeläinen standing in the way.
