Scunthorpe United's new club chairman Steve Wharton has explained
the reasons behind his return to the boardroom at Glanford Park.
He has taken control once again, and Brian Laws has been
reinstated as manager. The news is great for the struggling
team and gives the fans hope, but four club directors have
resigned because of it - John Godfrey, Brian Borrill, Barry Collen
and former chairman Chris Holland.
A board of just three has been left, with Wharton joined by vice
chairman Rex Garton and new director Simon Elliott.
"Over the past few
weeks it has become increasingly obvious that all at Scunthorpe
United has not been well,"
said Wharton.
"It is no
secret that I have been personally critical of the way the club
has been going especially after the excellent order it was in when
I handed it over six short months ago.
"We owe it to the supporters, shareholders, management and staff
to be bold and take some positive decisions at this time.
"I am delighted with the response of the current management team
Russ Wilcox, Peter Beagrie, Nigel Adkins and Paul Wilson, who
believe something had to be done to give us the best possible
chance of maintaining our league status and are fully supportive
of the changes that are now being made.
"All the players have been informed and we are hugely encouraged
with the very positive reactions from them all.
"We honestly believe after talking to all of the playing staff
personally that they will be united and positive for the next four
games and beyond.
"The re-appointment of Brian Laws as the manager, until at least
the end of season, is fundamental to our plans and we are
delighted that he has unreservedly accepted our offer.
"He can't wait to get back with the players, and as far as we are
concerned there is no need to look any further than Brian, who has
every attribute we need in a manager as well as an extra-ordinary
passion for the club.
"It is expected that after the re-constitution of the board at a
meeting today that the board will consist of myself as chairman,
Rex Garton, and our newest director Simon Elliott.
"This board will be totally committed to the success of the club,
fully committed to the long term future and success of Scunthorpe
United, and I honestly believe we have a great wealth of
experience and enthusiasm to ensure all our goals can be achieved.
"We know that we need to further engage the supporters.
"Without them being united it makes everyone's life very
difficult, and so to this end we will shortly be announcing a
series of measures aimed at better communicating with them and
involving them, with initiatives such as 'fans forums,' supporting
an organised and active supporters club, and immediately improving
facilities for supporters in the Iron Bar, making it a venue we
can be proud of.
"We know from the feedback that the actions we have taken will be
seen as essential.
"Those fans that are not so sure need to keep a positive and open
mind and lend their support to the club as they have done for many
years.
"Finally, I would like to thank the directors who have resigned
for their past service to the club. I know they still wish
Scunthorpe United much success."
