Kilmarnock 0-0 St. Mirren

Birchall showed potential
By Jamie Cockburn September 24 2007
Saints won a vital point away at Kilmarnock in a much better display than we have seen in the past few weeks. Alan Reid replaced a suspended Franco Miranda. New on-loan star Chris Birchall made his first start for Saints and made a very impressive performance.

Despite the loss of the Argentine St. Mirren managed to create a few corners early in the game.

Alan Combe came to Killie’s rescue when he blocked Hugh Murray’s shot on the left hand post.

Nish had a header on target from Willie Gibson's cross as the first half drew to a close, but it was a simple save for Smith.

Saints took off Reid at half time and McGinn came on to help play on the left hand side.

And it was the buddies who showed the early threat when McGinn shot from 15-yards ended up wide of the goals.

McGinn nearly scored moments later when Chris Birchall’s cross-met his head but was sent just over.

Killie had a penalty claim rejected when a David Van Zanten appeared to handle during a goal mouth scramble and then Birchall cleared Nish's header off the goal-line.

Substitute Stewart Kean nearly sent the buddies a winner when his shot from the edge of the box flew inches past Combe’s post.
