Burke started his senior career with Kilmarnock where one of his team-mates was Saints Manager Gus MacPherson. During his time at Rugby Park he won a Scottish Cup winners medal when Killie defeated Falkirk in the 1997 final at Ibrox Stadium.
Moves to Falkirk, Clydebank then Queen of the South followed his stint with Kilmarnock and in the summer of 2004 MacPherson tried to acquire Burke for St Mirren when the player was looking for a new club.
Burke decided to head north to Ross County then 12 months later when it looked as if the player was out of favour with the Highland side MacPherson once again tried to entice him to Love Street. But Burke settled his differences with County and stayed another season with them.
