Celtic still on the signings trail before deadline
By Patience Magill August 8 2004
Celtic chairman Brian Quinn confirmed today (August 8) that the club will continue to seek new additions to the squad in the run-up to the end of August Champions League transfer deadline.
Quinn, speaking to BBC Radio Scotland, stressed that the club had been very active in negotiations during recent weeks, despite Camara's arrival as the only signing so far. It is known that Celtic had an offer for Turkish international Yildiray Basturk turned down in June, as the player wanted to remain in Germany.
The chairman, who unfurled the league flag today for the third time in four years, made it clear that the club would continue to chase signings. He said the main aim, apart from retaining the SPL championship, is to attempt to progress beyond the group stages of the Champions League for the first time this year. But he stressed that the club would not depend on that progress in financial terms, suggesting that the only "banked" money at this stage will be that which comes from CL participation.
Hoops Online understands from Parkhead sources that O'Neill is targeting a defensive midfielder - a possible Paul lambert replacement - and if possible a left back. He wants a creative midfielder, especially with Europe in mind, and this may explain why he has approached Middlesboro's Brazilian star Juninho last week.
Juninho asked for more time to think about a move. he is known to be happily settled on Teesside, although his first-team position has been jeopardised by the arrival of several signings including the ex Celtic and Leeds United maverick Marko Viduka.
O'neill is rumoured to have talked to representatives of Marseille captain Brahim Hemdani.
Another French-based player, RC Lens midfielder Charles-Edouard Coridon, arrived on trial at Parkhead last week, and is expected to appear as a triallist when Tottenham Hotspur visit Glasgow for a friendly on August 10.
One player who WON'T be in the Hoops is Newcastle and former England striker Alan Shearer. O'Neill says he inquired about Shearer during the close season, and Quinn confirmed that the player's agent had approached Celtic recently. However, Sir Bobby Robson and his chairman have said they don't want Shearer to leave Newcastle, despite this being his final year on contract. Shearer is known to be keen to take over the Newcastle manager's position, and intrique deepened at St james's Park when it emerged that Robson has been told his own contract won't be extended next summer.

Hoops Online comment: Just as well Shearer isn't coming to Parkhead, given what Celtic fans have been singing about him in the Henrik Larsson song these last 7 years !
