By Bobo the Great December 18 2003
It was confirmed yesterday that plans have been on-going for the proposed 'British cup', this would be where the winners of teh CIS insurance cup meet the winners of the Carling cup.
Plans for a Battle of Britain are at an advanced stage, with the winners of the Carling Cup and CIS Cup to face each other in May. A date of May 25th has been selected as a proposed date and many officials from the FA and SPFA are for the idea.

If the plans go ahead then it looks likely that the first final will be played at Hampden park, Glasgow at the end of the current season.

"We have been in discussions with our colleagues in England about this proposal, It is a good concept but no decision has yet been made," read an SPL statement.

Carling sponsor both sides of the Old Firm and are keen to resurrect interest generated by the recent European clashes between Rangers and Manchester United and Celtic and Liverpool. A Carling spokesman stated "We understand the hype and exitment that takes place when a Scottish team meets an English team, we are hoping to give the British fans this every year"

SFL secretary Peter Donald has revealed that recent discussions have yielded positive responses from both north and south of the border.

He said: "I can confirm discussions have taken place with our colleagues south of the border and there has been a positive reaction"

Proposals drawn up by The Football League state that the winner of the trophy will receive £450,000, with the losers picking up £300,000. With TV revenue, the tie could be worth upwards of £1 million to both participants.
