This edition of the Young Ones looks at Millwall's utility man Steven Reid
Steven Reid made his Millwall debut at just 17 years old against Bournemouth in the later stages of the 1997/98 season. 4 seasons on and Reid is firmly established as a key player in the Millwall team mainly down the left wing, however his great versatility allows him to play almost anywhere on the pitch.

Having learnt his trade in Division 2 this season was a massive step up for Reid and a chance that he was desperate to grab. On the opening day of the season, against Norwich, Reid put in a man of the match performance which included a superb long range goal as Millwall won 4-0.

Reid's form and adaptability attracted the attention of EIRE boss, Mick McCarthy who called Reid into the senior national team. Reid had already played for the U-21's despite been born in Kingston and representing England at schoolboy level. Reid is eligible for the Republic thanks to his Irish Grandparent.

Despite impressing for both Millwall and the Republic, Reid missed out on the final squad of 23 to travel to the World Cup. This was only days after playing as Millwall crashed out of the play-offs to a late Birmingham goal. Despite these dissapointments Reid can take heart from what has been achieved in such a short space of time and he still has plenty of time left. He will no doubt be able to esablish himself on an ageing EIRE team and look to help Millwall into the Premiership next season.

Update 15/4/02: Steven Reid was called into the Rebublic's World Cup squad due to the withdrawal of Mark Kennedy.
