Deano started his playing career in Yorkshire with non-league side North Feriby United in 1990 before he moved to his place of birth, Hull City a year later. While at the Tigers he played just 176 league games while netting on 57 occasions.
His next move in 1995 saw him move north of the boarder for £700,000 in the shape of Aberdeen. He stayed at the Pittodrie Club for three years where the Dons won the Scottish League Cup in 1996. The following season he scored some important goals including one against Celtic in a 2-2 draw and scoring 4 in a ten goal thriller away at Morton as Aberdeen won 7-3, though during that season he was sent off three times.
Following his career at Aberdeen he moved back to England where he joined First Division Oxford United at the start of the 1998/99 season, he played 33 games and scored 15 goals, including a brace in a local derby against Swindon Town at the Manor Ground.
Later that season he made the move back to Yorkshire where he joined Bradford City at Valley Parade. He did not score many goals for the Bantams that season but at the end they where promoted following a 3-2 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers which took them up to 2nd place.
While at the Valley Parade he scored 15 goals in just 64 league games before moving to tee side in March 2001. He joined Middlesbrough where in only managed 16 games in two seasons and just netted three goals during his spell their.
While at the BT Cellnet Riverside Stadium he was moved out on loan to Sheffield Wednesday, he played just two games before injury forced him to go back. This brings you up to the 2002/03 season where he moved to Bramall lane on a months loan, he scored three goals in four games before going back.
Months later and Neil Warnock managed to re-sign Windass for Sheffield United on a permanent deal, where United would pay a fee if the Blades march up to the Premier League.
