Leeds V Palace - History on our side
By BatFastard August 25 2008
Football is back at Elland Road on Tuesday as Leeds host the visit on London side, Crystal Palace. Here Batfastard takes look at our prospects.... On Tuesday night we face a Carling Cup tie against Championship outfit Crystal Palace; a match many people are suggesting has taken on an extra significance, after our somewhat mediocre start to the season.
We will be hoping to use the game to try to recapture the free-flowing passing football that Gary McAllister prides himself upon and that has been a hallmark of our better performances under his stewardship – though it is a style that has often been conspicuous by its absence on other occasions.

The portents from the past are largely favourable though against the South Londoners who we have met 9 times in Cup competitions in the past, losing on just 2 occasions.

The most recent meeting was a 5th Round FA Cup tie at Selhurst Park in February 2003 which marked a return for the then Leeds boss, Terry Venables, to his old stomping ground, where he was chorused with boos throughout the game by the home fans. A cheeky quickly taken free kick from Gary Kelly and a beautiful solo run and finish from Harry Kewell gave us a 2-1 victory.

Prior to that, we have to go right back to 1997 for our previous Cup meeting – an FA Cup 3rd Round fixture. A thrilling 2-2 draw at Selhurst Park, which saw Nigel Martyn save a penalty against his former club was followed by a 1-0 replay victory at Elland Road, courtesy of a Rod Wallace rocket from the edge of the box as we approached half time.

We then have to travel much further back in time to find other fixtures. In 1976 the then 3rd Division Palace scored an astonishing 1-0 victory at Elland Road, in a decade which saw the mighty Leeds team often stumble against lower opposition. Palace went right through to the semi-finals that year.

We had no less than 4 meetings with them during the 1960s: first up, a 2-1 home League Cup 1st Round win in ’62, courtesy of goals from Jackie Charlton and Jim Storrie. Three years later and Storrie was again on target – this time in a 3-0 F A Cup Quarter Final game at Elland Road in a season where we went all the way to Wembley, only to be beaten at the final hurdle 2-1 by Liverpool. In 1967 Palace were our 3rd Round F A Cup victims, again 3-0 at Elland Road with goals, this time, by Mike O’Grady, Willie Bell and the legendary Albert Johanneson. That year we progressed right through to the semi-finals, falling 1-0 to Chelsea. The following year, however, Palace exacted some revenge, beating us 2-1 at Selhurst Park in a League Cup 4th Round match – our goal from Paul Madeley.

Finally however, our first ever Cup meeting against the Londoners was way back in 1930 and provided us with our biggest ever victory against them. In a third round FA Cup tie at Elland Road goals from Turnbull, White (2), Jennings (2) and a hattrick from Wainscoat secured a wallopping 8-1 victory. If Gary Mac can pull off something on that kind of scale on Tuesday night, he will certainly silence the early season grumblers with aplomb!
