Revolving Doors at Elland Road

Following the excellent capture of former Swansea City winger Andy Robinson at the end of last season, transfer activity at Elland Road has burst into life over the past month, with many names passing in either direction through the proverbial revolving doors.

Following the excellent capture of former Swansea City winger Andy Robinson at the end of last season, transfer activity at Elland Road has burst into life over the past month, with many names passing in either direction through the proverbial revolving doors.
Bristol City striker, Enoch Showumni has finally signed on the dotted line, having almost joined us during the transfer window last January. The big striker’s signature has fuelled speculation that Tresor Kandol will be heading the other way through the revolving doors, as the two have very similar attributes.
Our strike force has been further boosted by the capture of former Livingstone star, Robert Snodgrass, who has signed a three year deal at Elland Road, with manager Gary McAllister commenting that he had been tracking the poetically-named youngster fo
r some time.
Perhaps the most predictable arrival, however, was left-back Alan Sheehan from Leicester City, who made his move to Elland Road permanent, after his successful loan spell last season. His move was part of a large clear out of playing staff by the Foxes, who also surprisingly allowed the influential Ian Hume to transfer to Barnsley.
Meanwhile, McAllister remains hopeful of bolstering the strike force even further by completing a deal for the impressive Argentine striker, Luciano Becchio. Macca has released Canadian striker Marcus Haber however, following a short trial period where the youngster sadly couldn’t quite meet the high standards demanded at Elland Road, despite scoring on our recent tour of Ireland.
Moving in the other direction, January signing Anthony Elding has signed for fellow League One outfit, Crewe Alexandra, having failed to force his way into Gary McAllister’s plans. Despite showing much energy in his rare appearances in a white shirt and even scoring the consolation goal in the 2-1 home defeat to Cheltenham, the striker did not do enough to convince McAllister that he had the skill to match his undoubted commitment.
Young striker, Toni Ameobi, has joined newly promoted Championship side, Doncaster Rovers, having spent the majority of last season on loan at Scunthorpe United. The brother of Newcastle United star, Shola, made just one appearance for Leeds, in the 3-0 Carling Cup defeat at Portsmouth last season, so it perhaps quite surprising that he has made the jump to the Championship without having established himself at a lower level.
Curtis Weston has joined Scottish side, Hibernian, on trial with a view to a permanent deal. The youngster failed to establish himself at Elland Road, having moved here under Dennis Wise, though he did manage one goal as a substitute in the 3-0 home win over Northampton back in January. It is perhaps a little surprising that Weston - who famously appeared in the 2004 F A Cup Final for Millwall - has not followed Dennis Wise to Newcastle – Wise has previously taken the youngster from Millwall to Swindon and then Swindon to Leeds and clearly holds the youngster in high regard.
If actual players have been passing swiftly through the doors, then th
e rumours have passing through at twice the speed. Leeds have been variously linked with a number of players (mainly strikers) over the past month, including Jay Bothroyd, Derek Riordan, Andy Cole, Kevin Phillips, Christian Nemeth and a return for last season’s successful loanee, Dougie Freedman. Meanwhile rumours continue to abound about departures with Kandol, Ian Westlake, Sebastian Sorsa, Sebastien Carole and even Jonathan Douglas and Jermaine Beckford the subject of speculation.
All in all then, it has been a busy month at Elland Road and there is every reason to suspect that there may well be other names to add to the above lists, before battle commences on August 9th.
