Doncaster 0 Leeds 1 - report

Sheehan celebrates
By Andy Baggott April 1 2008
Leeds secured a vital win against promotion rivals Doncaster Rovers this evening. Left back Alan Sheehan (see picture, celebrating goal) scored the winner, hitting in a superb free kick on 20 minutes. The full back has turned in some improved performances since returning to the team 3 games ago, and was rewarded tonight with the winner.

Sheehan though wasn't the only star, with some excellent performances through out the team.  Leeds lined up without star men David Prutton and Rui Marquez.  Jonathon Douglas and Paul Huntingdon stepping in - the latter turning in a classy performance.  At right back Fraser Richardson came in to replace Kenton who had a hamstring strain, the same as Rui.

Doncaster started the brightest, and Ankergren had to be quickly out to defy a clean through Heffernen.  It was Leeds though who grabbed the opener with Sheehan firing home after Douglas was fouled.  Both sides were playing some nice football, and Beckford went close, whilst the home side created a number of chances.

After the interval, it was more of the same - Doncaster started strongly, but couldn't force the ball home, but as the half went on, the away side got a grip, and either side could have grabbed the next goal - it was Leeds who held on though for a deserved win.

Leeds manager Gary Mac admitted his side rode their luck earlier in the second half, but the match was a good advert for the game.  The manager was impressed with the way they threw their bodies on the line to defend the goal, and the general commitment.  He was also full of praise for goal scorer Alan Sheehan, mentioning his work in training to get fit, and that we were now starting to see what a good player he could be.
