Third consecutive win for the Irons

West Ham 1-0 Reading
By Bonello
September 14 2003
The Irons continued their climb of the first division table with a third consecutive win under caretaker boss Trevor Brooking thanks to an early Christian Dailly goal....
Before I tell you about the match I feel a special mention must go to the army of people running up Green Street in their 118-118 costumes shouting ‘Got your manager’ to the angry looking Reading supporters. Magic.

So, into the ground and met by what seemed a particularly large Reading following who had taken up most of the Centenary lower. Fair play to them, they made their presence known well before the game and as I’ve said, were there in their numbers. They soon shut up though. Not only due to the fact that they decided to sit back on their arses as soon as the game started but also down to the fact that the 30,000 or so West Ham fans were well behind the team again. To be honest, I think the Reading fans were a bit embarrassed after they started to abuse some of our fans in the East Stand and the whole ground promptly replied with who the fucking ‘ell are you? whilst standing at pointing at the bastards. Ha ha, up the Irons.

Anyway, better talk about the game now. Nothing to write home about but still, a win’s a win and seeing as Reading are expected to be chasing promotion, this win can be seen as a very good one.

West Ham started the better team and were pretty much ripping Reading apart in the opening ten minutes with Jermain Defoe hitting the post and Dave Connolly also going close. On 17 minutes the pressure did pay off though, a towering header from Christian Dailly sticking one on the scoreboard for the claret and blue. From this point however, we stopped playing again for a while. David James was hardly bothered though and it was the Reading ‘keeper being forced to do all the work.

The game strode on and West Ham looked fairly solid in all areas under Trevor Brookings again changed tactics. A few complaints from the Boleyn faithful were aimed at Defoe and Dave Connolly who don’t seem to like passing to each other, but other than that I think with Carrick back in the midfield we can only improve from this performance which we won with anyway.

On the note subject of the debutants; both look up for the job, in particular Alexandersson who I thought looked a very tidy player.

This win lifts the Hammers up to third place in the table with a trip to Crewe coming up on Tuesday night. Up the ‘ammers.
