Are you thinking of travelling to Azerbaijan? Well here's all you need to know about the Tofig Bahramov stadium in Baku!

Saturday 4th September 2004

Azerbaijan vs Wales

The game will be played at the Tofig Bakhramov Stadium in Baku, home to Azerbaijan club side Neftchi Baku.

The stadium bosts a capacity of 38,010 with 25,110 seats.  Designed by architects Consiarsi, Isayev and Sergeyev on a hill side overlooking the sea, it was built back in 1952.

The Azerbaijani Football Federation has only been in existence since 1992 and became affiliated to FIFA two years later.

They inherited the stadium named after the Azerbaijani linesman responsible for awarding the much-talked-about contentious goal in the 1966 FIFA World Cup final between England and Germany.

Having not made much of an impact on the international stage in their brief history, Azerbaijan have called on the legendary Brazilian Carlos Alberto Torres to help them try and qualify for the World Cup in Germany in 2006.
