Wales Name Injury Doubts In Squad

Risking it.
By Martin Williams August 23 2004
Mark Hughes has taken a gamble on the fitness of Andrew Melville and Simon Davies ahead of Wales' two World Cup qualifyiers against Azerbaijan and Northern Ireland by naming the duo in the squad despite injury concerns.
Wales travel to Baku on 4th September to face Azerbaijan before playing Northern Ireland at the Millennium Stadium four days later.

Manchester United star Ryan Giggs is suspended for these games after UEFA reviewed video evidence from the away leg of the qualifying play-off against Russia.

And Manager Mark Hughes has named Tottenham winger Simon Davies in a 27-man squad despite the 19-cap player having had a shin operation.

West Ham centre back Andrew Melville has also been included despite fears that he could be out of action for three weeks with a hamstring problem picked up in Wales' friendly with Latvia on Wednesday night.

"We have been getting regular updates on Simon and he is ahead of schedule," said Mark Hughes.

"It does not actually matter to me whether he has played a game for Spurs before the internationals.

"We would like him to be involved if at all possible.

"On Melville, the nature of hamstring injuries is that they can take two to three weeks to heal and that would make him very doubtful for the two matches."

Cardiff City trio, Robert Earnshaw, Danny Gabbidon and Paul Parry are back in the squad after missing the Latvia friendly through injury.
