Latvia - Wales: Preview
By Martin Williams August 18 2004
Mark Hughes has his first choice strike partnership available this evening for the friendly match against Latvia in Riga. With Rob Earnshaw injured 'Sparky' seems certain to go with John Hartson and Craig Bellamy up front.
The match which kicks-off at 5:30pm will act as a warm-up for Wales' upcoming World Cup Qualifying matches against Azerbaijan and Northern Ireland in early September.

"To have Hartson and Bellamy back is excellent," said Hughes.

"I haven't had many chances to play them together over the last couple of years because of injury problems.

"But John has looked sharp in training after recovering from his back operation, while Craig looks confident."

Both Hartson and Bellamy have managed to get on the score sheet for their clubs already this season, and Wales will be looking for the power and pace connection to link up as they did so well when Wales beat Italy 2-1 at the Millennium Stadium nearly two years ago.

Cardiff City trio Danny Gabbidon (heel), Robert Earnshaw (knee) and Paul Parry (knee) were ruled out on Sunday after fitness tests at the squad's base.

While John Oster (shin splints), Nathan Blake (hamstring) and Danny Coyne (ankle) are also unavailable after being injured in club games on Saturday.

While Wales mist out so narrowly on qualification for the European Championships in Portugal after a defeat to Russia in the play-offs, today's opponents Latvia did manage to qualify for the competition.

"Latvia did extremely well in the summer and the home crowd will get behind them," said Hughes.

"But it's up to us to spoil the home- coming and any party atmosphere."

Wales (probable): Jones (Wolves), Delaney (Aston Villa), Melville (West Ham), Page (Cardiff), Thatcher (Man City), Robinson (Sunderland), Savage (Birmingham), Speed (Bolton), Pembridge (Fulham), Hartson (Celtic), Bellamy (Newcastle).
