In moments of boredom I often try to think of better, or more apt tunes for Coventry City to run out onto the pitch to. Currently, a thankfully almost forgotten Del Amitri tune springs to mind:
"Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all; The needle returns to the start of the song; And we all sing along like before."
Conceding soft goals, missing easy chances, having to many players in certain positions and not enough/any in others, so having to play to many players out of position. As a consequence of those failings, most of our time is spent two-thirds the way down the league table. It's been happening for far to long now, and I'm bored of it.
Amongst the XI that started against Derby were four central midfielders, and three strikers, meaning a massively unbalanced side. Some would say the selection was forced on us due to injuries, though McKenzie still claims he is a striker anyway, and a fair few think Jay Tabb's best position is in the centre of midfield, rather than in one of the wide positions we have nobody properly capable of filling.
The team lacks leadership all over the pitch, isn't intimidating enough, and, as has been stated a few times recently, our support isn't intimidating either. The Ricoh Arena is far to 'welcoming'! At times the players also seem to lack concentration, and, worst of all, lack enough desire. I'm sure our players always give their best, but, watching other teams, they seem to be giving that little bit more.
There's been evidence that we can play decent football, but far to often we spoil it by conceding totally unavoidable goals, and far to often too. One is to many, so the amount we actually have is unacceptable. As I said before, we have good defenders without being a good defence.
The midfield area is a bit of a mess, and although Chris Coleman doesn't seem keen to bring in loan players, it's time he did. Gunnarsson is still impressing me (Sadly, his throw-ins are still the seasons highlight for me), while Beuzelin or Doyle alongside are a slight improvement on what we had last season - but not much, and not enough.
As for the strikers, I would put Morrison's lack of goals down to the fact he is helping out all over the pitch - our very own Wayne Rooney! But, as was the problem with Rooney at MU, his being everywhere reduces the likelihood of him being a massive goal threat for us. He proved at Crystal Palace that he knows where the goal is, and I shouldn't think the positioning of said target is much different at our ground to theirs!
The fact we are, according to the Sunday papers, looking to off-load Michael Mifsud on the cheap once again has me wishing we would just take the money and run when it's on offer. Getting rid of your best players is always disappointing, but nowhere near as disappointing as watching their value drop so massively in less than a year.
And yes, as people keep pointing out, it could be worse, as we could now be out of business had it not been for our saviours. But how long are we going to cling to that for because any sort of success on the pitch still deserts us? Yes, we're re-building, but can people stop using the words 'work in progress' as an excuse? Every team is a 'work in progress' - even MU and Chelsea!
David James recently revealed that before a season starts, he trawls through the record books looking for some he can try and break. It wouldn't take much for our players to become the stuff of legend, and get their names written in Coventry City history books - and then, more than likely, a move to a big club.
With a recession set to begin, and people needing to save money to survive, Coventry City need to up their game if they don't want more of the loyal few to stay at home on matchdays. So, if we're to keep hold of the supporters we do have coming through the turnstiles - and hopefully even attract a few more - maybe 'Something Better Change' by The Stranglers would be more a more apt tune to come out to?
