Pre-Season - Week 11
By CovSid67 July 21 2008
Two defeats in two pre-season friendlies .... but no matter, because it's all about fitness (So 'they' say!). On the plus side, the potential signings of Wright and Morrison can only improve the squad (As could half-a-dozen players leaving). And hopefully one or two others will be joining too.

Former Sunderland right-back Stephen Wright, impressive in his trial period with Coventry City, has been offered a contract. The idea of playing a right-back at right-back really does suggest this season could be something special. Clinton Morrison is also expected to be offered a deal, and on paper looks a quality foil for Freddie Eastwood. The idea of having two quality strikers that know where the opposition net is really does suggest this season could be something special.

Portsmouth full-back Martin Cranie is believed to be a loan target for Chris Coleman. The England Under 21 international was on loan with Queens Park Rangers last season, but the loan ended when he suffered a broken leg. Rumour has it that when Richard Duffy heard Chris Coleman had been on the phone to Redknapp, his heart skipped a beat as he thought he was coming back to Coventry, but it was only distraught sighs after he realised he was not the reason for the call....

It's been revealed that Ray Ranson and SISU have already spent £5 million on the team since taking over at the club. According to Coventry Telegraph figures, the breakdown is as follows: £1.2 million, rising to £1.5m, for Freddy Eastwood; the final £400,000 installment of the £1 million fee for Elliott Ward;a combined fee of £1.5 million for Scott Dann and Dan Fox, who both joined from Walsall in the January transfer window; goalkeeper Keiren Westwood cost in the region of £750,000 from Carlisle; and Aron Gunnarsson an initial fee of £250,000; and they took over making payments for Borrowdale and Best.

Those pre-season details:

Coventry City 1-3 FC Brasov

Goals: Maldaran (2), Best (39), Zahara (55), Hadnigy (57).

Supposedly a friendly, but the tactics of the Romanian side left a lot to be desired, including elbowing (With Gunnarssen ending up with a bloody nose) and spitting. A match most notable for the fact keeper Ireland, who looked fairly disaster-prone up until recently, pulled off some quality saves.

Team: (First 45 minutes): Westwood, Wright, Fox, Hall, Ward, Mifsud, Beuzelin, Tabb, Gray, Simpson, Best; (Second 45 minutes): Westwood (Ireland 63),  Birchall, Borrowdale, Dann, Turner, Simmonds, Gunnarssen, McKenzie, Thornton, Eastwood (Morrison 71), Kyle.

Coventry City 0-1 Stade Nyonnais

Goals: Gary Pardo (90)

A late goal, coming from another set piece, saw Coventry City lose their second game (Of two!) on their tour of Switzerland. Scott Dann wore the captains arm-band for this friendly.

Team: Westwood, Wright, Fox (Turner 75), Dann, Ward (Hall 46), Gray (McKenzie 69), Beuzelin (Thornton 75), Gunnarsson, Tabb (Mifsud 69), Best (Morrison 62), Simpson (Eastwood 46). SNU: Ireland.
