Woe Is Us!
By CovSid67 January 24 2008
Okay, I'd better write something else they'll cut me off again! I'm not keen though, as, sadly, as far as all things Coventry City is concerned, the future looks bleak! It might only be three league games, but 2008 has been rubbish as far as Coventry City are concerned, and 2007 didn't end well either....
Three Championship matches, three defeats, and not much positive to write about - hence the lack of articles! Bristol City away, Leicester away, and Burnley at home have piled on the misery that is currently being a Coventry City supporter, with a few more defensive howlers to add to this seasons collection - and what a collection.

Michael Mifsud has stopped scoring goals (Unless it's a cup match!), while Kevin Kyle is .... Kevin Kyle. His return from suspension after a red card received versus Blackpool saw him sent off again, this time against Burnley. That said, his leaving the pitch early in that game coincided with a much improved Coventry performance! Quite how bad he has to play before Iain Dowie admits defeat and gets rid, I don't know, but most of his displays since signing for us have been right down there with the worst of them.

He 'appears' to dive so often even Cristiano Ronaldo has been heard to complain, he can't head the ball properly (Twenty-five crosses in the match versus Burnley, and he failed to connect with any!), he has no pace, and also has no idea where the goal is. And the fact Wolves have apparently been turned down twice when enquiring about him would suggest ID is losing the plot. If they come knocking a thrird time, for Cliff Richards sake, get rid!

And Leon Best has sadly decided he wants to leave, meaning there is even less chance of Adebola and/or Kyle heading off to pastures new (Please be 'and'!!). Dowie claims LB has been badly advised, though with Coventry City seemingly heading in one direction (Down), and Nottingham Forest possibly swapping places, who can blame him? (Decent business if we make a profit on him, though personally I would rather keep the player). Added to two naff strikers and one throwing his dummy out of the pram is the news that Leon McKenzie's dead leg, expected to keep him out of the side for a matter of days, was in fact a ruptured thigh - meaning he will be out for 10-12 weeks....

Also added to the woe is the fact Dowie wants to offer new contracts to Stephen Hughes and Dele Adebola! We've surely (Not) seen enough of them by now to know they are not tha answer! Unless the question is: 'which two players would you keep in your side if you want to finish mid-table or lower?' Oh yes, With Dimi Konstantopolous looking slightly dodgy between the posts, our back-up keeper (Who many think should be first choice) is also out for a month. Happy days.

If we're looking for positives, there's at least two: the first is we're still in the F.A. Cup! Though our stunning 4-1 win away at Blackburn once again has supporters scratching their heads, wondering just how can we turn over a such a decent Premiership side on their own ground, yet lose to relegation threatened rubbish such as Leicester? The second positive was watching the square peg in a round hole that was Liam Davis fill in at left-back versus Burnley. He gave a competent performance (Better than the first choice left-back has managed for a while!) from a player hoping to earn a new contract this summer. Unlike the majority of our defence, he insisted on 'passing' tha ball out of defence, nearly always finding somebody in the same colour shirt as he was wearing.

Our next match is against Millwall in the F.A. Cup. Is the match important enough for our players to bother joining in? Or do we believe it's only 'little Millwall, and we'll win this with ease'? If we show that sort of attitude, we're in for a hammering. The players owe us - but the Championship is far more important, with the threat of relegation finally seeming to dawn on a few people (Though one or two people are STILL mentioning the play-offs! GET REAL!). And unless there's a few dramatic improvements in our walking wounded, we apparently have the majority of our defence unavailable this weekend - going on what we've seen so far this season, maybe that's a blessing?

The transfer window is open, and with our transfer embargo now lifted (Positive No. 3, as long as we don't lose Mifsud) it's to be hoped ID brings in some real gems from the lower leagues - which is where just about everybody linked with us seems to be playing their football at the moment...

As well as Coventry City letting me down, my computer has too. 2008 was supposed to see the Coventry City section of this site well and truly arrive, and make it a 'must view' section at least every other day (There's only one of me writing it - though  am hoping to get Andy Goram to assist me, taking the number of contributors to three). Amongst other lost articles are: the '2007/8 Squad' details (Almost finished!),  as was '101 Arena Facts' (Up to 'Fact 99'), a half-time report on the 2007/8 Season (Probably for the best that was lost, as it made fairly dismal reading), and, most importantly, a list of everything I have to sell!

"One thing we must stop doing is conceding outrageously sloppy goals" - Iain Dowie, afer the Bristol City match.
