Reaction and pics to the Crewe game
By Nathan Jackson
August 24 2005
As usual, we bring you our roundup and reactions and pictures from the last game and this time, it's the 5-1 thumping of Crewe Alexandrea in the Carling Cup first round. For a change, another team has been very complementary to us and City now face a potential trip to a top Premiership stadium.

Well I don't really know what to say for once, there are few words I could actually say which would truly show how I feel about tonight's result but I think I can sum it up in 2 words. WE'RE THERE.

Jesus Christ, it's amazing how easily we controlled the majority of that game. I can't recall a Lincoln game where we looked like scoring with every attack that we went on and even at 5-1 up, we still didn't stop looking for extra goals and if we top this kind of performance this season, then we're in for a treat.

It was also nice to see City playing nice, flowing football for once and although there was the occasional hint of long ball, we still played very well and there wasn't a single City player who didn't impress and if Keith doesn't start Keates on Saturday, then there is something wrong.

(sorry about the lack of photos, unforunatly, for some reason, the majority of pictures came back blurry, possibly something to do with the floodlighting and stuff)

"Absolutly magnificant performance today and I was very pleased with the overall spirit and closing down"

"We kept the ball down and scored some very excellent goals"

"Some of our passing was good, our movement was good and the goals were good. If you look at the team that played tonight, and the team that came out in Cardiff, it's a very different team and people have to give them time to gel"

"Birch is having a good spell, he's using his strength, holding the ball up and scoring some great goals"

"The only consolation from the game is that Lincoln thoroughly deserved to win. We couldn't cope with the way they played and their front three caused us all sorts of problems"

"We didn't cause them enough problems and out of our front 3, the only one that really got a touch was Varney"

Dario Gradi, manager, Crewe Alexandrea.

Keates, Kerr and Brown in midfield were outstanding and Cryan should play at Centre-Back all the time.

Birch is scoring for fun and Marvin struck like a viper with his first touch

We were superb and I told KA so after the game”

“Just got back to Sheffield and have to say that was the worse performance I have seen in ages. No disrespect to Lincoln who chased and harried and really got about us but we were p*ss poor.
To be honest, strangely as it seems apart from
Tonkin who was poor again, the defence really weren't to blame. The main problem was a completely non existant midfield who didn't tackle, didn't track back, didn't win any second phase ball etc etc. My ratings as follows out of 10”

“I'd be surprised!!! Just when we thought we'd got a bit of stability and consistency in the side we go and get thumped by Lincoln. Things will never change will they!! We'll probably go and win at Southampton on Saturday now. Absolutely bizarre. We have got to be one of the biggest jekyll and hyde sides around. Capable of beating an on paper half decent side in Burnley, but also capable of losing to a two bob outfit from the lower leagues.

I think gradi should have just gone with the kids tonight. This could have a negative effect on too many first-teamers. The last thing Williams needs is to have a bagfull stuck past him. What it does strengthen the argument for is a new Centre half. We knew what we've got wasn't ideal, and that the wheels were bound to come off at some point, but my god, when the alex cock things up, they do it good and proper.

Don't think the alex will ever be capable of avoiding freak results like this!! What is a totally pointless competition could have serious repercussions on our league form. Oh well lads, get out there and put it right on Saturday.”
