Imps beat surprisingly lacklustre Wrexham

Lincoln City comfortably beat last year's losing Playoff Finalists Wrexham. A brace from Ben Tomlinson lead to the Welsh club's downfall, not helped by them not having a single worthwhile shot on target.

The Imps came into the game on the back of their first defeat of the season and a side that showed four changes from that defeat at Wrexham and a return to the 4-3-3 formation that has surved the Imps well at home.

The visitors had the game's first effort but Thornton blazed well over from distance. Fairhurst had a shot go wide from 25 yards before again hitting a first time effort wide of the target. Boyce thought he had opened the scoring with a header from a Dan Gray throw in, but Mayebi produced a fine save to deny him.

It was a slow first half with neither side really getting a foothold on the game. Stephen Wright had to be replaced by Leon Clowes ten minutes before the break due to a hamstring injury. It appeared as though the game was heading to the break with a stalemate before a Dan Gray cross was headed into the path of Tomlinson by Boyce and he snuck in and lofted it over Mayebi for his first goal for the Imps.

Fairhurst came close to doubling the scoreline as his impressive volley flew staight into the arms of the Wrexham goalkeeper. Sheridan hit over from close range to end the half.

The second half began with a comedy moment as a Farman clearance was going out for a goalkick at the other end. It was about 3 yards from the corner flag and Mayebi for no apparent reason tried to keep it in.....and failed miserably as he gave away quite possibly the softest corner that has ever been given at Sincil Bank.

Chances were still few and far between with neither side really pressing an authority on the game. Wrexham did have two efforts sail well over the bar and they were made to pay for their lack of clinical finishing when Gray sent a throw into the box and it fell to Tomlinson, the former Alfreton man hit it first time and it trickled past a motionless Mayebi for 2-0.

Nothing really happened after that and the Imps won't have a more surprisingly comfortable afternoon for quote some time.
