Imps go down at Grimsby
By Nathan Jackson
July 30 2010
Lincoln City's poor record at Blundell Park continued with a 4-2 defeat to the Blue Square Premier side. Only 32 City fans made the trip, a number that was probably made considerably smaller by the Echo reporting that it would be a youth side, as it turned out only one youth team player made the starting eleven.

Lincoln's "youthful side" was Musselwhite, Clarke, Clapham, Cunningham, Pearce, Miller, Hutchinson, Keltie, Facey, McCallum and Adams, four of whom are over the age of 30. In all fairness only two of those are likely to start many games this season. Grimsby on the other hand fielded a relatively strong squad that contained former City target Alan Connell.

Despite having a team of fringe players, the Imps took the lead in the 13th minute as Gavin McCallum scored from close range following a corner. Coulson played a through-ball to Bore and he equalised in the 22nd minute. It wasn't long before it was 2-1 to Grimsby with Connell scoring against the Imps for a fourth different club. McCallum equalised within a minute.

Garner headed an Eagle corner but Cummins hit a low shot beyond Musselwhite. All of thise came before half time.

The second half was considerably less exciting with no goals scored, although Kempson did clear a Hutchinson effort off of the line.

Good to see McCallum score twice and I think the run out was probably more important than the result for the Imps whereas it was the Cod's cup final.

I think that given that it was a strong Grimsby side vs a side for us that could be described as "fringe with two first teamers", we did quite well in terms of the scoreline. Didn't go myself after the impression given by the Echo that it would be the youth team.

Also interesting that Fagan was included, makes you wonder if Sutton will give him a chance.

Good Luck, Mr Gorsky

I think that CS is quite pragmatic and has shown by involving Clarke and Fagan during preseason that they are not going to be totally frozen out and will be used if required. Probaby one of the reasons they are still here - a belief they can force themselves in or can put themselves in the shop window - that and being on better wages than they can command elsewhere too.

I wouldn't read too much into Clarke or Fagan getting squad numbers, or being added to squads to make up the numbers. Why risk a 1st teamer in a game of little consequence? Also, in training the first team need players to play against.

We may see the situation change if the number of loan players brings our numbers up a bit.

I think Grimsby fans think it was a proper pre-season friendly and not the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy. I've never once seen a team bring a decent away following to one of these games.
