A year in Exile
By theimps.tk
July 2 2009
I have been an exile for 12 months having moved to Nottingham last July. I'll admit that I hated living in the city and all I wanted was to move back to Lincoln, but now I'm finding myself wanting to stay, so in this article I will look at the advantages and disadvantages of supporting a football club when living as an exile.
I've been an "exile" for around a year now and the difference is intense. It's not just the fact that Sincil Bank is no longer a two-three minute drive away, it's not just a case that I now have to travel to most away games on my own, it's all the little things as well. It's strange finding myself in a city where I am the one of the few fans (that I've met) of the team that I support, as opposed to one of the four around the local area. During the last twelve months I have met just one other City fan, and saying met is a bit loose considering I'd already known him for several years.

It's quite tiring in fact to know that every time I head to a home game, I have roughly an hour drive ahead of me to get there. Night games were even worse, finishing work at 6pm before our Friday night game against Rochdale, traffic along the way meant I only made it to the stadium about 10 minutes before kick off. It's not ideal as most people who know me know that I like to be at the ground well in advance. It may have been a home game and my season ticket would have come into play to get my normal seat, but that's not the principle of the thing.

With the current stupid rules regarding parking at Sincil Bank, the common and various other things, it's means that I'm having to wake up early to stand a chance of getting there in a decent amount of time so that I can get parked for free. Driving up the same tired roads isn't exactly something I look forward to, driving up and down the A46 at least twenty-three times a season isn't as appealing as it sounds, especially as you get nutters who are prepared to risk their lives to get one car length's distance closer to wear they want to be.

I didn't imagine that when I moved last summer that I'd be so frustrated about the distance I have to go to get to home games. It wouldn't be so bad if there were alternatives roads to the A46 that would get me there on time, the only "quick" (and I do use the word loosely) alternative route is driving via Mansfield and through the back roads before ending up just outside of Saxilby....a journey that takes about ninety minutes.

However, it's not all bad as with the vast majority of games for the Imps involve travelling down the A46 at some point, meaning I get to skip about an hour or two out of the journey, allowing more time for rest. It made that four hour drive all the more "tolerable" knowing that even though I was completely on my own, that at least I had more sleep than the majority of the other City fans who made the trip.

There were trips that would normally take two/three hours to get to places such as Macclesfield, Shrewsbury and various others, but now they're only an hour to ninety minutes away. Then again, the flip side of the coin saw me take two hours to get to Grimsby, a trip that would only take an hour from Lincoln. Then there is the awfully monotonous motorways, driving to places like Bury, Rochdale, Accrington, etc, on just two motorways (the M1 and M62), a journey that makes 1 hour 45 seem like days.

However, enough of moaning about the roads and onto other issues regarding exiles.  As I mentioned earlier, living in an alternative area means that I get virtually no coverage on the Imps. There's no five-page coverage from the Lincolnshire Echo, no post-match analysis where they describe virtually every player as poor, but rate them with the same numbers as when they reckon the player(s) have played well. There's no two or so minute pieces every once in a while on Look North Hull, and no radio coverage on Lincoln at all. All I get to rely on is the local teams saying they deserve to do better, news about violence and various other things associated with Nottingham.

Infact, it does get harder writing articles when you don't live in the city where your team is based. Obviously if I supported a Premiership club then I'd have no end of news pieces about us on Sky Sports News, but I support a League Two club and that means maybe two or three seconds worth of out-of-date information on the information reel at the bottom, although they often take commercial breaks when the news reel bit comes on.

Then we get onto the issue with ticket issues, buying stuff from the club shop and other various aspects to again deal with travel to Sincil Bank. Buying a ticket for an away game is no longer a case of taking a very quick trip on my lunch hour to Sincil Bank and getting it there and then returning to work. The mailing at Sincil Bank hasn't improved either as I've ordered several items over the internet, not arriving until up to two weeks later.

However, living away from Lincoln isn't necessarily a bad thing. It has allowed me to meet new people, make new friends (and enemies) and learn more about other areas of the country. If City aren't playing then I have the opportunity to go to one of the four football clubs within a few miles of Nottingham (Forest, County, Eastwood and Ilkeston), although some of the football I witnessed from those four clubs was certainly not very good. Infact, even Sam Mullarkey could have scored against these teams as they played that badly.

In Lincoln I was one of many City fans and that didn't allow much variation on conversations about football, but now I have lived and worked with fans of Nottingham Forest, Notts County, Derby County, Chesterfield, Luton Town, Sheffield United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Carlisle United, such is the variation on living in a big city. In Lincoln I only had a few Grimsby fans, the odd Scunthorpe fan here and there, but that was it.

So is being an exile a good thing? In some ways it is, in others it is not. There is obviously the disadvantage of living away from the location of the football team you support and that you aren't as regularly updated as fans who live near the ground, but there are also many advantages. You extend your knowledge about other football teams through other fans and share in their experiences.

Just a thought Nathan regarding travelling to Lincoln why dont you use the train? I use it regularly to get to trent bridge for cricket. Bit dear I know but you're in the middle of the city when you get hereand you dont have to worry about parking. Also it means you can a drink without any worries.

I know where your coming from with this one!

Having been born in Lincoln but having moved to Stamford, south lincs at an early age, every City game I have seen has been as an 'exile'.

My dad took me to my first game at 8 years old and I would attend city games every season scince, often with cousins uncles ect. while visiting family still in Lincoln.

As my user name suggests I now live in Peterborough, not the easiest place to be a Lincoln fan at the best of times, but especialy not now they are in the championship. The banter at work is always livley, but I dont need the abuse sometimes recieved when wearing my shirt out.

I still manage to make 12-15 'home' games a season and a few of the closer away fixtures, its only an hours drive to SB but the A15 is a real slog at times!

The thing which bothers me most about being an exile is how authentic a City fan I can be, especialy as I dont seem to speak with the same accent as most Lincoln locals, now I am worrying about where my kids will be born and how this will shape thier loyalties, I would hate to have a posh fan for a son! In conclusion I think it would be easier to support Lincoln while living in the area, but unless I change job, girlfriend, this will not be possible!!

Good article Nathan.

I know where you are coming from concerning the parking. It is a real pain trying to find free parking near the ground when you have travelled a long way.

I miss seeing the Imps every week now, and I feel quite detached at times. However you do get a sense of pride trying to tell clueless others about your team, and explaining why you support them.

The reason I don't go on the train is because I'm usually working at the cinema at 6:00 after home games, meaning I barely make it whilst driving.

Anyway, I'm back in Lincoln for good on Saturday, although having said that I have received some job offers from around the world. Got offered a job at a ticketing hotline in Ireland, working in admin at Vodafone in Newark and a manager at a cinema down in MK.

Random Fact : Nathan's favourite movie is Willow (1988).

I live some miles south of Peterborough, but do work in the city (teacher in the Ortons) and my son, who was born in Huntingdon in 1990 is an Imps fan through and through! We had season tickets from 2002/3-2007/8 six seasons, broken only by the fact that my daughter got married in 2008 (May) and we subsequently couldn't afford a season ticket.

Nathan,

I managed Cinemas for 4 years.

Fun job. Crap hours and@#$%&pay.

I'd do a 6-3am Friday night, followed by a 9-6pm Saturday morning. I'd fall asleep in front of Blind Date with half drunk cup of coffee next to me and wake up with a mouth that tasted like the Cat had used it as a litter box.

Mind you I did meet my wife there and that was 12 years ago.

I too hate the fact I cannot get to every home game although living away from Lincoln makes you more inclined to go to away games which I enjoy more than going back to my Mecca that is Sincil Bank.
Parking is a mare but I usually find spaces either down Cross Street or roads off it, if you get there by 1pm you are usually OK. Alternatively parking down the road opposite Blockbusters on the High Street (used to lead down to RB before the shopping centre and Tritton Road were there)!!
I live about 2 and a half hours away in the Cotswolds but it is an ideal base for away games.
Would never move back to Lincoln, I am a General Manager of a hotel and Lincoln is hardly blessed with good hotels!!
Being away from Lincoln people have the upmost respect for you as they just cannot fathom why you would support Lincoln City......I just tell them I have always been a glory-hunter!!

Good point. Theres a certain amount of reverse snobery about supporting Lincs. Many of my mates down here say its great I support my hometown team. In fact, its crap, and Ive been doomed to watching 20 years (and counting) of shite football!

My son was six when I took him to his first game at the Bank. We lost 2-4 to Wigan! (Look where they are now!) He has been Mascot twice, POSH at Sincil Bank on Easter Saturday 1998 (3-0, great day) and also a bit later at a pre-season friendly Vs Huddersfield I think.

He has witnessed the Imps at 41 different league grounds (including some who have dropped out the league...) plus twice at Cardiff.

Better get cracking Boroimp!
