I remember that just under two months ago, I sat here and I was truly lost for words. I couldn't picture how we'd even pick up a point, let alone be on the verge of a season that could go down as a great one. We were lacking something and it just wasn't working. Skip forward two months and now the Imps look capable of returning to the days where were regularly fighting for promotion.
As I got out of my recently fixed car and walked down to Sincil Bank at about 11:30am, I had the feeling that this could be the game at we show our intent for the season, although I did have a little trepedation due to Chesterfield being the best team we played last season. Infact, I couldn't have imagined the afternoon being as relatively comfortable as it was. Chesterfield were poor, and I do mean poor.
However, I'm not going to dwell on how bad the opposition were, because we would have still beaten the majority of the sides in this division with a performance like that. I think it's all down to the new defence, a defence that actually looks like it can go more than ten minutes without conceding a goal. Infact, we've only conceded wonder goals and freaks since the defensive horror show at Bury.
Speaking of Bury, I think it says it all about our improvement this season that the only four games we've lost have been against sides who have had excellent starts to the season. We've lost to three of the current top four and a Rotherham side who would be sixth if it wasn't for the points deduction. It's just a pity that we haven't taken better advantage when we've played teams such as Morecambe.
Anyway, back to the game. It was pretty much all Lincoln, you'd never have guessed we were a man short for just under half the match. So many of our players had good days and it shows that we have the old cliche of being able to beat anyone when we have our players on song.
I've struggled to pick a man of the match to be honest, but one man who needs a special mention is Janos Kovacs. In an age where players can be brought and sold easier than guns in Nottingham, it's refreshing to see a player who didn't make a big fuss about scoring against his old employers. Fortunately not many ex-Imps score against City, but those that do seem to take personal delight in it, Janos didn't and that was clearly appreciated by Chesterfield fans, who in all credit to them, appeared to take the defeat well as most of them stayed to the very end.
So where now? We have four winnable games coming up. We should, in theory, beat Macclesfield and Bournemouth, Gillingham will be a tough game but Port Vale are living up to my pre-season prediction of being mediocre. If we can take around 8 points then that will be an excellent return, but then again, this is Lincoln and now watch as we'll struggle to claim three points.
THEIMPS.TK UNOFFICIAL PLAYER RATINGS FOR THE GAME AGAINST BRENTFORD | ||
PLAYER | RATING | COMMENTS |
1 - ROB BURCH | 7 | Couldn't do a lot about the goal and general performed well. Actually caught virtually everything and had a relatively quiet afternoon. |
2 - PAUL GREEN | 7 | Not a bad little performance from Green. Had his own personal battle against his old friend, Jamie Ward, which he easily worn. |
4 - JANOS KOVACS - MOTM | 9 | Put in easily his best performance in a City shirt so far. Compared often to Jamie McCombe, Kovacs rounded off a near perfect performance with a goal against his old club. |
5 - LEE BEEVERS | 7 | Reasonable performance from Lee and excellent tracking back for that tackle on Jack Lester. Didn't put a foot wrong all afternoon. |
6 - FRANK SINCLAIR | 7 | Frank seems like the model professional. Came off the bench with a point to prove and did a generally good job. He'll certainly be looking to re-cement his starting place with Hone suspended. |
7 - STEFAN OAKES | 8 | If we can keep Stefan fit then we're laughing. Even his mishit balls go to our players. Easily the best technical player we have at the club. |
8 - LEE FRECKLINGTON | 6 | Really quiet game from Freck. He didn't do anything wrong but he was nothing more than average. |
11 - SCOTT KERR | 7 | Solid and dependable as usual, can't complain. |
12 - DANY N'GUESSAN | 6.5 | Lost the ball on a regular basis but also put in a lot of dangerous balls into the box. If only he could use his talent on a regular basis. |
14 - LENELL JOHN-LEWIS | 6 | Improvement on recent weeks but still nothing spectacular. |
15 - BEN WRIGHT | 6 | I was a bit disappointed with Ben to be honest. Don't get me wrong, he didn't do a lot wrong, but the problem is that I could have used that mini-sentence without the word "wrong". Played 25 minutes and didn't really do a lot. Is this the same player that scored 15 goals last year? |
16 - DANIEL HONE | 7.5 | Had Jack Lester in his pocket before getting sent off. It's a shame as Danny has been our best player in recent weeks. |
23 - ADRIAN PATULEA | 7 | Good awareness for the goal and really should have scored more. Can't complain about 4 goals in six weeks, he'll easily reach twenty if he keeps that up. |
