City pay the penalty at the Walkers

Lee Frecklington was the only player to score a penalty for the Imps in an otherwise shocking shoot-out for the men from Sincil Bank. City held out for only their second clean sheet of the season against a strong Leicester City side, but some shocking penalty taking means that City's three year run without a win in any knock out competition continues.

Leicester kicked off the game and the Foxes had a free kick within the third minutes when ex-Leicester own-goal machine, Frank Sinclair, fouled Lloyd Dyer. Matty Fryatt took the free kick for Leicester but it flew well wide of the target. Sinclair intercepted a Wesolowski cross before Shane Clarke blocked Andy King.

Lincoln's first sight of goal came on ten minutes when Scott Kerr was fouled. Sinclair floated the ball in and Henderson had to produce a fine save to keep it out. LJL gained another free kick a few minutes later, but that was wasted by the Imps. Ayden Duffy's first real touch of the ball prevented Matty Fryatt a free run on goal before Kovacs headed over following a 15 pass move from City.

Duffy gathered a Leicester corner before Michael Morrison missed horrendously from distance. Danny Hone, making his first start of the season, won the ball of of Howard before slipping to allow Matty Fryatt in. Fryatt crossed the ball in and Howard missed by a couple of inches, although it would have been far easier to score.

Berner fouled N'Guessan to give City a free kick, but N'Guessan showed his inconsistency by instantaneously giving away a free kick straight from this. Henderson had to be alert to deny the Frenchman when Dany shot from 25 yards out on the right. The rest of the first half went without note and the sides went into the break level, although the home fans were far from happy with this.

King replacing Howard up front at half time for Leicester and it was the hosts that produced the first goalbound effort of the second half, although Duffy was alert enough to make a comfortable save. Berner again fouled N'Guessan, this time obstructing a clean run on goal, earning a yellow card in the process. The Frenchman received the ball from the free kick and his goalbound shot was deflected over, City wasted the resulting corner.

Gradel replaced Dyer for the Foxes just minutes before they wasted a corner of their own. Hone continued to impress as he headed a free kick out before LJL earned a free kick after a vicious challenge by Tunchev, the Imps man was replaced by Ben Wright near enough immediately.

Duffy punched well clear from a corner as he was on his way to his second professional clean sheet. Gall replaced Patulea for City. The Imps counter attacked from a corner but Gall's shot was claimed with ease by Henderson. Beevers was booked for a challenge on Gradel but the game was quickly becoming devoid of chances and neither side could manage another decent effort before the end of the 90 minutes.

Berner put the first penalty confidently to Duffy's left before Frecklington drew City level with a well placed effort. Fryatt made it 2-1 before Kerr saw his weak effort saved. King hit the post for the hosts but City couldn't draw level as N'Guessan also had his effort saved by Henderson. Leicester made it 3-1 through Wesolowski before Sinclair stepped up for the visitors, aiming to keep City in the game. He sent his spot kick well over the bar and the Imps were out at the first opportunity of a cup competition...again.
