Bury got the game underway and they had the game's first chance. A Frank Sinclair clearance fell at the feet of Andy Bishop and the striker rounded Burch, hitting the side netting instead of tucking away into the net. It was an early let off for City but it was a rare attack for either side in the opening 10 minutes. A foul on the 10th minute allowed Stefan Oakes a chance on goal. He stepped up to the free kick and his 35 yard set piece curled wickedly before Brown claimed in as it was entering the net.
A corner from Kerr saw Kovacs head onto the roof of the net. Neither side were creating many scoring chances and play stopped for several minutes as the heads of Sodje and Lenell John-Lewis collided. It got to the half hour mark and the Shakers won a corner. It sailed in and Sodje headed it into the path of Andy Morrell, the veteran smashing into the net and giving Bury a lead from their first shot on target....a familiar story for the Imps.
However, things weren't all as they appeared and City were level just six minutes later. City won a corner and Kerr played it in, Kovacs headed it goalwards and it deflected off of David Buchanan and into the net. City were almost in front just a minute later, but Dany N'Guessan's shot just went wide. Neither side managed another effort before the break.
John-Lewis saw City have a promising start to the second half. He sent a left footed volley across goal and missing by only mere inches. However, City's defensive problems from set pieces emerged again. It started when Bury won a corner and Bishop's goalbound effort was cleared out for another corner by Kerr on the line. The resulting corner found Sodje at the back post and the defender who loves playing against Lincoln, scored his fourth goal against the Imps in five appearances.
Kovacs almost replicated that move a few minutes later but his header was easily claimed by Brown. Bury won a corner and Ben Wright made a rare contribution to the game....giving away a penalty. He was adjudged to pulled Paul Scott's shit and the Shakers had a penalty. Andy Bishop stepped up and scored his third goal in his last four appearances against the Imps.
Wright was then replaced by Patulea and the Romanian could have been on for less than a minute as a rash challenge on Sodje saw him fortunately escape with just a booking, Sodje was also booked for his reaction. Patulea was aiming to score from a City corner but this time the referee didn't notice Brown holding him down and the chance died. Morrell was replaced by Hurst.
Burch was booked after being fouled before Gall replaced Kerr, Baker also coming on for Jones. Patulea launched the game's final attack, bursting forward from midfield before passing to Gall....it was little surprise that the "striker" wasted the chance.
