Chips, volleys and hammers...Part 4
By Nathan Jackson June 29 2008
So, which of the goals during the past 5 seasons did you vote as the best? In this final part comes a backheeled volley, two 35 yards stormers, a dipping thunderbolt and an old player going back and destroying his old club. These are the best of the absolute best.

GOAL 5

Louis Dodds - vs Wycombe Wanderers- 2007/8 season

This was the only goal from the recently completed season that is included in this Top 20 countdown. The Imps had been improving in the previous month, putting together a run of 6 wins in 8 games and City were aiming to pull off a performance before Peter Jackson left for his treatment for cancer.

The game was heading for a 0-0 draw, the Imps were general control against a team that would finish the season in the Playoffs. Louis Dodds was a striker who scored a handful of goals throughout the season but rarely made any other contributions. However, when he received the ball after a brilliant turn from Lenell John-Lewis, he took a touch and sent long range effort curling around the Wycombe goalkeeper.

It would end up being voted as the goal of the season and despite playing 10 more games during the season, Louis Dodds failed to score another goal for City.

GOAL 4

Gary Taylor-Fletcher - vs Cambridge United - 2003/4 season

This was a tricky game for City. Cambridge had only lost twice on the road all season long and certainly weren't going to be push overs. However, the Imps got off to an excellent start when a Paul Morgan hoof forward failed to see a Cambridge United defender deal with it. Gary Fletcher (as he was known then) took a take an swung his heel at it. It sailed through the air and Shaun Marshall flapped at it as it went into the net for one of the more skillful goals of the season.

Cambridge would quickly equalise when Marriott was beaten along the ground from 40 yards. GTF would restore the lead before Danny Webb scored against his former loan club in the final minutes.

GOAL 3

Dean Keates - vs Bury - 2005/6 season

If football scores reflected the games then City would have already been about 6-0 up by the time Dean Keates stepped up for a free kick just before half time. City had dominated but it took one of the most stunning goals you'll ever see to seperate the two sides. Keates was roughly 35 yards out and hit a free kick at the first attempt, it sailed and weaved through the air before ending up smashing the back of the net. Bury fans quickly started claiming it took a deflection on it's way through, but unless a defender can jump 20 feet in the air then there's not a chance.

City could have easily won the game 10-0 but ended up having to travel back to Sincil Bank with a draw after Bury equalised in the final minute with their first shot of the game.

 GOAL 2

Richard Butcher - vs Mansfield Town - 2003/4 season

No player has featured more on this top 20 than Richard Butcher. The former Imps midfielder could score some stunning goals. Butcher's 4th and final goal on this countdown came in a tough trip to Mansfield. The Stags at the time were challenging for the Division 3 title and had an excellent home record.

It didn't take long for City to take the advantage though as Richard Butcher tussled with a Mansfield defender about 35 yards out. The ball fell loose and Butcher hit it first time. Straight as an arrow and the speed of a runaway train is what you could use to describe this shot as it sailed past the despairing Pilkington. It sent the City fans wild.

Liam Lawrence did he usual audition for Dancing on Ice as Mansfield won a penalty. Alan Marriott got a hand to Lawrence's spotkick but couldn't prevent it going in. However, City did eventually win when Peter Gain scored a few minutes into the second half.

GOAL 1

Gary Taylor-Fletcher - vs Leyton Orient - 2003/4 season

City had take GTF from Orient in the first week of the season. He had a poor record at Orient but he was certainly doing the job for the Imps, leading the goalscoring charts and a long way ahead of his nearest challenger.

GTF had already given the Imps the lead in the third minute but City were certainly findining it hard against a tough Orient side. The men from E10 hadn't lost at home in 4 months and they came close on several occasions to equalising against the Imps.

Early on in the second half came the goal that you voted as the best we have scored since this site began. Gain capitalised on a mistake by an Orient midfielder and gave GTF the ball on the halfway line. He past one defender and ignored Marcus Richardson's pleas for the ball to be played to him, another defender...and another and GTF was clear all of a sudden. He smashed the ball into the net to bring a round of applause from all of those in the ground.

GTF went off as substitute minutes later to a standing ovation from all those within Brisbane Road.
