Reaction to Steve Torpey's 2007/8
By Nathan Jackson May 16 2008
Steve Torpey was the first signing of the 2007/8 season and many people weren't disappointed when he left in mid-November on loan to Farsley. He wasn't a popular figure with the fans and the reaction to him being substituted at Doncaster Rovers was one of the more vocal reactions to a player going off in recent memory.

Steve Torpey was arguably the least popular signing that John Schofield and John Deehan made during their time at Sincil Bank. The vast, vast majority of fans were not impressed by a player who had his best days come and go a long time ago. His substitution at Doncaster Rovers saw a huge sarcastic cheer followed by a chorus of booing that signalled City fans weren't happy.

Torpey would win headers on quite a regular basis, but you'd be struggling to find many that went to a Lincoln City player. That combined with a general lack of effort on occasions was the reason he was mainly disliked.

It didn't take long for Jackson to realise that Torpey had no future at the club. Torpey lasted until half time in Jackson's second game before the former Scunthorpe striker was offloaded on loan to Farsley.

Overall, I think that Torpey was just too old to play at this level anymore. I don't think that his performances would have been much different even if he had put effort into every game.

Probably the worst player I've ever seen at the club. Terrible signing that was a key factor in Schofield losing the support of the fans and effectively his job.

Yep particularly when Schofield said that Torpey was a back-up player yet was in the first team more or less every match under the Two Rubber Johnnies.

nathan when torpey was getting slated by everybody you were backing him up by saying he won headers you was countered on the fact they never went to a lincoln player. you also said at the time he led the line well, what changed your opinion?

I can't recall ever saying he led the line well, infact I don't think I've ever said that about any player.
