Is there any chance of a defender?
By Nathan Jackson
May 15 2008
Lincoln City's pre-season seems to be taking a similar tone as usual, with very very few defenders being linked with a move to Sincil Bank. We're currently being linked with players in every position with the exception of a much needed defender, a shocking piece of information when you consider we conceded 90 goals last season.

The Imps have so far been linked to many players in each direction. Stuart Nelson, Kevin Pilkington and Donovan Ricketts have all been linked to replace Alan Marriott. Matt Hamshaw and Danny Schofield have been linked to come into the midfield whilst Michael Boulding has been touted as a name to play up front...but we have yet to hear a single link with a defender.

The problems with the defence have existed for well over 18 months and yet nothing has been specifically done about it. John Schofield only seemed interested in bringing in attacking players, whereas Jackson's only defensive incoming was Lee "I have the turning speed of a snail" Ridley.

The fact is that we don't really have problem scoring goals, it's keeping them out. As much as I admire Jackson and think he will do great things with this club, we have no chance of going up without new defenders coming into this club. We conceded 4 or more goals on 10 occasions during 2007/8 and unless we bring in at least one new defender, then it will more than likely be a similar case in 2008/9.

The only links with defenders so far have been on message boards. They include Jamie Clapham from Leicester and Darren Moore to name just two.

Defenders are often not aswell known as the attacking options & proved all have been rumours. Look at the amount of players available, with the majority probably on holiday. Little business will be achieved until June time - so no need to worry just yet, Jacko will have this area high on his priorities.

I must say that for once, I agree with Nathan 100%. I really don't think that a striker or midfielder is anywhere near our priority for next season. Apart from Kerr, all the players in the more forward positions are well capable of getting a decent goals return. As Nathan said, the same thing happened last season when it was clear to just about every supporter that we needed to push the boat out a bit and get a decent centre-back. I honestly feel that we need to spend £50,000+ or offer a good contract to a top quality centre-back (or two).

What is happening with Bencherif? I thought he did well when he was here and don't think he got much of a chance at Forest when he returned. He wouldn't be my idea of the centre-back solution, but could be a useful back-up and is a young and improving player. Him and an experienced commanding CB could be just what we need next season. I've really lost patience with Beevers, and Hone should not be expected to be 1st choice through a long campaign. As for Nat Brown, get rid ASAP!

Keep hearing Hamza bandied about as a possible signing.

Lets remember, he is a young lad like Danny Hone. And more pertinently he was a part of the defence that shipped many goals this season.

Think we need to look for a little more experience.

I mentioned it before that around here (Mansfield), we are being linked with Baptiste. A majority of the names linked are just runours, and all this does is wind certain fans up for a moan when the players that come in are not of the same quality.

i think the reason why hamza wont be coming here is that be play under the 2 johns, not one of jackos singings so maybe jacko doesnt rate him??

You could well be right. Although Jacko may appreciate his more technical ability he may well be looking for someone with a bit more bite and a big mouth.

The think is though Southern how many decent centre backs would have risked joining a club that looked like heading for the conference? Jacko said he trusted the players he had to get us out of relegation, they achieved that comfortably in the end - however, they have limit and in order to progress we need better players in.

IMO Hamza would be an excellent signing. Solid defender and showed signs of being a decent passer, some of his crossfield balls spreading the play were awesome. Also could play a "Nat Brown-esque" last 10 mins cameo as a striker. The difference between the two is that Bencherif can play football. We looked really dangerous in the closing stages away at Wycombe and most of this was down to Bencherif running at defenders! (not to mention his penalty on that shootout video)

Christ, if he can take penalities like that all the time he's worth signing just for that.

Lets keep this Darren Moore rumour going though, it will eventually snowball into him and his turning circle coming to Lincoln!
