Mansfield are relegated without even playing
By Nathan Jackson April 29 2008
Mansfield Town have been relegated from League 2 following Chester City's 0-0 draw with Stockport County on Tuesday night. It comes as little surprise after they spent most of the season in the drop zone and much like Wrexham, never went on a winning run to take them away from the drop zone like many of their relegation rivals.

It is the second season in a row that the closest team to Lincoln City in League 2 have been relegated. 12 months ago it was Boston United and now the Stags are going to be playing non-league football next season.

The Stags have been in or around the drop zone all season. Their highest position of the season was 11th place after a first day draw. Since then their highest position in the table was 18th, one of just 10 weeks of the season that they didn't spend as one of the bottom two.

One of the main reasons for their downfall will more than likely be that Boulding scored 25 goals but no other player got past the 4 goal mark. Boulding is now almost certainly set to leave Field Mill, with Lincoln City one of many teams currently tracking him. There have been rumours that he and Matt Hamshaw agreed to come if Mansfield went down.

Mansfield will now play their final League game on Saturday as they travel to Dagenham and Redbridge.

Spent the evening listening to the local radio and I began to feel sorry for them. At the end I remembered how I felt when it happenned to us. I even started to think how bad I had been by wanting them to go down.

Sorry I can't go on any longer and i hate lying, BYE BYE Mansfield. I won't say anything when I bump into their fans just grin at them with a deep down satisfaction.

At the beginning of the season I predict them to get relegated. I then got emails from hundreds of them saying

"We won't go down, we have never gone down to the non-league and never will!"

Wonder if I'll recieve emails from those people again.

I really don't think enough people involved did enough. Yes they will blame Haslem and what he is doing is unacceptable. However they have used him as an excuse when in reality they haven't been good enough on the pitch. They spent alot of money on Hamshaw, a player who must now be looking at where Stockport are. Perhaps its a lesson we should look at before we start jumping in there getting their players. Yes the ability is there but what about the attitude when the going gets tough.

I would suggest that you cannot divorce "off-the-field" shenanigans from what happens on the pitch. The long-running saga of the ownership of the Club, and the uncertainty going with that, has undoubtedly played a role in their demise. If there is any lesson to be drawn, it is that one.

It isn't as if the players haven't been paid like at Rotherham. I admit it is comical though. they have the Mayor, the local MP about 4 supporters groups and Haslem all jumping in with their ideas. On top of that the only real buyer for teh club seems to be Mr Batchelor.
