FRIDAY 21ST MARCH 2008
Just as the Premiership have their "Super Sunday" that sees the top 4 face each other, League 2 is having it's own "Fantastic Friday" as Peterborough and MK Dons square up at Stadium:MK. Both sides were amongst the pre-season favourites for promotion and both are looking likely to be in League One next season. If the game ends with a winner then the losing team could all of a sudden have Hereford and Darlington closing in one them.
It's a very difficult game to call between the two best squads in the division. Both sides are full of match winners and both can score from nearly any situation. However, I'm going to pick Peterborough as a winner. MK Dons don't have prolific strikers but Peterborough have an abundance of attacking options. If Peterborough can keep Keith Andrews quiet then they are going to be the likely winners. I'll go for a 2-1 win for the visitors.
The other game on Friday night sees Stockport aiming to get into the automatic promotion race with a very winnable game over Macclesfield. Stockport are one of the form teams in the division now and should easily make the Playoffs. Macclesfield on the other hand are still in serious danger of going down and will have their work cut out to beat Stockport.
It's very hard to look past Stockport for this game as they are simply better than Macclesfield. 3-0 Stockport.
SATURDAY 22ND MARCH 2008
Brentford vs Wrexham is a meeting of a team in form and a team out of form, but it's not the way round you would expect. Wrexham have turned from relegation certainties to looking like escaping within just a matter of weeks. Brentford on the other hand have gone from dark-horses to the Playoffs into a bad run that sees them barely hanging onto a top 12 place. I think a draw is the likely outcome here.
Chester and Darlington is probably the most mismatched game of the weekend. Darlington are one of the best sides in the division and Chester are the most out-of-form side in the entire Football League. Anyone putting money on Chester to win might as well walk outside and shove £10 down the drain. I predict a Darlington win....a big Darlington win.
Chesterfield vs Accrington Stanley is a match that on paper you'd give to Chesterfield, but Accrington are very good on the road these days and Chesterfield are poor at home. Accrington have shown they can win at Playoff chasing teams and I'd fancy them to pick up a maximum haul against Chesterfield. 1-0 Accrington.
Dagenham and Redbridge vs Shrewsbury is another game hard to predict. Shrewsbury are in poor form and Dagenham are falling back into the bad form of the early season. No score draw.
Hereford against Bury is another game that on paper should be a home win, however Bury are no mugs anymore and with Andy Bishop coming back into form, Bury stand a decent chance of picking something up. Hereford's may be in an automatic promotion race but I think they'll struggle to overcome Bury and it'll probably end 1-1.
Mansfield haven't won at home since boxing day, infact they've barely picked up a point at Field Mill since boing day. However, I feel that their long overdue win could finally be on the way against Grimsby Town. The Mariners aren't in bad form themselves but I think with Wembleynot too far away, they'll have thoughts elsewhere. 2-0 Mansfield win.
Morecambe have suddenly gone from surprise playoff contenders to also rans. They face a very tricky test in the form of Wycombe. However, Wycombe are already near-enough guaranteed a playoff place and that could see them not putting in the same amount of effort they would do if they weren't pretty much there. Morecambe have shown that they're not a bad side and I think they'll be worth a 3-1 win.
Rochdale are suddenly right back in the Playoff hunt. 1 point off the pace but with trillions of games in hand makes them a likely addition to the end of season lottery. One of the best away sides in the division travel to one of the worst sides either home or away. Notts County are a team on the slide and after losing this game 2-0, they will be in the relegation zone (if the Mansfield win predicted above happens).
The final game of the day sees an intriging tie between Rotherham and Bradford. Will Rotherham's thoughts be elsewhere given their situation or will their points deduction make them even more determined to make the Playoffs? Although Bradford aren't a bad side, I think they're not even close to being as good as Rotherham and I can see them leaving Millmoor on the back of a 2-0 defeat.
MONDAY 24TH MARCH 2008
MK Dons could head to Accrington Stanley on the back of a defeat to Peterborough but would seriously fancy their chances of getting something at Accrington. Stanley have the joint most home defeats (12 with Chester) in the division and they are up against an MK team that is simply better in every department. Although I think it will be close, I'd be surprise if MK don't win.
Bradford vs Chesterfield was played on the final day of last season and the visitors thumped their opponents, but both went down. Chesterfield have adapted better to League 2 life than their hosts but Bradford don't have any pressure on them and that could be the difference. Chesterfield have pressure to get results due to Rochdale's amount of games in hand and I think that this could cost them points at Valley Parade. 1-1.
Bury vs Mansfield is a hard game to predict. Although on paper a team who are poor at home vs a team that are good away from home would lead you to assume that the trends will continue, but Bury have improved until Alan Knill and I can see them getting a point against a Mansfield side who haven't lost on the road since New Years Day. 2-2.
Darlington have a golden chance to get an advantage of Hereford as they entertain Morecambe. Darlington have a considerably better squad than Morecambe and I think this will prove the difference between the sides. 2-1 Darlington.
Grimsby and Brentford are two sides that have both turned from relegation battlers into dark horses for promotion. Grimsby have shown by far the more impressive form recently and will be wanting to get even more momentum in their final game before Wembley. I feel a big Grimsby win coming on, possibly 3-0.
Keith Alexander beat Barnet twice in his second spell as City manager, now at Macclesfield he'll be hoping the trend continues. However, Macclesfield are one of the worst home sides in the division and Barnet are a decent side on the road. I feel that a 2-1 win for the Londoners will virtually guarantee League football again net season.
Peterborough vs Chester. Quick frankly if this doesn't end as an absolute mauling then I'd be amazed. Peterborough aren't just better in every single department, but you could probably field just 6 Peterborough players and they'd be able to beat Chester. 6-0 Peterborough.
Before Rotherham's point deduction it looked unlikely that Rochdale would make the Playoffs, however it now looks exceedingly possible and I believe that with the Playoffs now a very real possibility, one of the best travellers will claim a win at Millmoor. 2-1.
Shrewsbury vs Notts County is a meeting between two of the most out of form teams in the country. I feel Notts' confidence will shattered after slipping into the drop zone and a Shrewsbury win is on the cards.
If the weekend predictions go as planned, then a Wrexham win over Dagenham could potentially drag Dagenham right back into it. However, I think a draw would be a decent result for both sides. 2-2.
Arguably the best game on Monday will be Wycombe vs Stockport. With the sides currently 5th and 6th respectively, this could easily be a dress rehersal for the Playoff Semi Finals and it's definitely a difficult one to predict. Wycombe are very good at home but Stockport are good on the road. I think we could be in store for a thrilling game. 3-3.
