Consistency needed for inconsistent Bury
By Nathan Jackson
July 8 2006
Bury have been a club that have been slipping closer and closer to relegation but are they set to avoid the drop again? Since entering the division, Bury have turned from promotion challengers to relegation candidates and they definately need to find stability to avoid relegation.

Manager : Chris Casper

Key Player : Alan Fettis

Most Interesting Stat from Last Season : They only managed back to back league wins twice but managed back to back defeats 6 times including twice losing 3 in a row.

Tipped by many for : Lower mid-table, likely relegation battle.

Last Season : Bury were lucky to avoid relegation and if it weren’t for Oxford being completely useless then they could have easily been forced into a playoff to decide who went down. Bury continued their tradition of beating all the teams at the top of the division, including Leyton Orient, Wycombe but they would often lose to teams that they should really have beaten and that’s what got them into trouble. Once Graham Barrow got sacked and Chris Casper took over, their form picked up but quickly capitulated again and despite finishing 19th, only avoided relegated by 3 points.

This season : Bury are trying to boost their squad with a decent goal-keeper in Alan Fettis and striker Andy Bishop, a striker who despite finishing with a lot of goals in the conference last season, has a poor record in the football league and if Bury rely on him to get goals, then they’ll more than likely be extremely disappointed. Bury’s inconsistency is their major downfall and even a change of manager didn’t change that last season and that inability to find consistent form will more than likely see them slip down the table as other teams pass them by without ever really excelling themselves.

They’ll avoid this fate if : The aforementioned Bishop needs to find some form in the football league for the first time because Bury no longer have David Nugent or Simon Whalley to bail them out with late goals. Fettis will also prove vital and if he can perform at his best level, you’d expect him to make at least 10 clean sheets, something that could easily save them from the drop.

Prediction : 22nd, Bury have been on the slide for a few years now and their form is definitely cause for concern but they should still survive, if only just but they will definitely need to start performing to avoid going into the conference.
