Buckley pleased with victory over Lincoln

Alan Buckley
By Chip Butty December 29 2007
Grimsby Town boss Alan Buckley praised his side for their 1-0 victory over local rivals Lincoln City on Saturday. A late goal by substitute striker Gary Jones gave the Mariners all three points in the last game of 2007 pushing them up to 16th in League Two.
"I thought the performance was really good. We bossed the game for long periods." Buckley told the post match press conference.

"We were worth the win. We played some good football at times. We got some dangerous crosses into the box and could have gone one or two up by half-time."

"Our keeper had very little to do. The only real threat was from set pieces and you fear the worst when you have dominated the proceedings and not got that goal.

"Their keeper made a fantastic save from a Rob Atkinson header.

"We started the second half slowly and we came on strong again and it was comfortable in the end for us."

He was also pleased with Nick Hegarty and Gary Jones whose second half contribution which gave the Mariners their victory.

"Jonah went on to do what he normally does and that's get us a goal. Nick [Hegarty] has been outstanding on the left recently and that was far and away the best game he has had while I have been at the club."

Lincoln City boss Peter Jackson however was less than pleased with the result.

"It was disappointing," he said. "The keeper kept us in the game with some wonderful saves, but his mistake cost us dear in the end.

"You only get one chance as a keeper and I thought he should have tried to tip the free kick over the bar, rather than keep it in play, and we got punished for it.

"The conditions weren't the best, but it was a passionate derby and we are bitterly disappointed that we have lost it by that mistake by the keeper."

The Mariners have now picked up 13 out of a possible 18 points with 4 wins, one draw and two defeats in the last seven games.

The next game is away at Chester City on January 1st. Chester are currently sitting in 8th place, one point off the playoffs.
