Sir Alex Ferguson has offered Dwight Yorke the chance to train with his former club ahead of this summer's World Cup.

The Trinidad & Tobago star, who once enjoyed a prolific strike partnership with Andy Cole at United, has been playing in Australia for Sydney FC but the Australian football season ended last week. Training with former team-mates such as Gary Neville and Paul Scholes will give Yorke the chance to maintain his fitness ahead of the finals in Germany.

"I'll have two-and-a-half months without competitive football." said the 34-year-old.

"I've had an offer to train with United but I know I need games too. I haven't accepted it yet, but I'd like to say thanks to Alex Ferguson."

Trinidad & Tobago, ranked 50th in the world, have been drawn alongside England, Paraguay and Sweden in the group stages of the World Cup. Though classed as clear underdogs for the tournament, a recent 2-0 victory over Iceland has done much to inspire confidence with both goals coming from the veteran Yorke himself at Loftus Road. His performances are crucial to the team's success in Germany, and cynics may suggest that Sir Alex's generous offer may have something to do with his former striker lining up against the English!

Some speculation has even suggested that should Yorke have a successful World Cup; United may line-up a short-term contract offer to bring the forward back to Old Trafford. Bizarre as that may sound, a whole host of Football League Championship clubs have shown interest in the star - with Derby County recently enquiring about the player's availability.

His displays in Australia and on the international scene show that, despite lacklustre spells with Blackburn and Birmingham, Yorke still has plenty to offer and is expected to really impress in Germany in June.
