Diego Forlan Scores....No Really, He Did!
By Chris O'Brien
June 3 2004
Diego Forlan was on the scoresheet as Uruguay were beaten 3-1 by Peru, further squandering the hopes of their hopes of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. Forlan was a shining light in a poor display from the Uruguayans, as the striker desperately tries to prove a point to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Out-of-favour Manchester United striker Diego Forlan netted Uruguay's goal, but his strike wasn't enough as Peru seriously squandered the Uruguayan's chances of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup with a 3-1 victory. Despite his poor form for club, Forlan is a key player in the Uruguay side and headed home his third international goal against Peru at the far post. His other goals on the international scene both came against Brazil a few months ago.

Rumours suggest that the 25-year-old is certain to leave Old Trafford for pastures new over the summer, with a move away from the Premiership most likely. It is fair to say that the flamboyant forward has had a very disappointing season, and is yet to come close to justifying the £7.5million Ferguson splashed out on him despite rare moments of brilliance.

The signing of Alan Smith, the return to fitness of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and with youngsters such as Daniel Nardiello knocking on the door for first-team places, Forlan faces a mountain to climb to earn any first-team recognition for the Red Devils next season. Real Zaragoza, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal are just a handful of names linked with the signature of Forlan, and a move away from Old Trafford looks the likely option for the former Independiente man.
