Once a blue? Rooney tipped for shock Everton return

Is Roon going back

Wayne Rooney could be set for a return to hometown club Everton, according to ex-England international Alan Shearer.

Speculation continues to mount about Rooney's future at Old Trafford, with many column inches linking the frontman away from the club.

Talk of Rooney's diminished role under Jose Mourinho is, arguably, a little over-stated - given the forward made 39 appearances over the season, more than in 2014/15 and 2012/13.

His appearances included five run-outs in the League Cup, and ten in the Europa League, as United won both competitions, to the delight of supporters.

Nevertheless, Rooney bagged only eight goals in all competitions - his fewest in any season with the club. He also started only 15 league games, with more than a third of his outings in all competitions coming from the bench.

The rumour mill has linked him with a host of transfer options - including to the continent, the Chinese Super League, Major League Soccer and fellow top-flight clubs.

However, an emotional return to Goodison Park is the prediction of Alan Shearer, who himself spent his Premier League career at Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United.

Shearer told BBC Five Live: "My guess would be an emotional return to where it all started - Everton."

The summer will reveal whether Rooney will add to his 559 United appearances, in what would be a 14th season with the Old Trafford club.
