Ex-United striker aims to reignite career at Bari

Federico Macheda

Former Manchester United frontman Federico Macheda is hoping to lease new life into his career with Italian Serie B side Bari.

Reports suggest the 25-year-old will face a trial with Apulia-based club, before they decide whether to sign the player on a permanent basis.

Bari currently sit mid-table in Serie B, and will be hoping that a successful move for Macheda could help propel the club into the promotion play-offs.

The towering Italian forward was tipped for a huge future at United, and made an incredible start to his Old Trafford career under Sir Alex Ferguson - curling home a jaw-dropping late winner against Aston Villa on his debut.

On his second outing, Macheda scored again, as a substitute against Sunderland. Though he ultimately scored 5 times for United, from 36 appearances for United - loan moves at Sampdoria, QPR and Stuttgart proved fruitless and goalless.

Following a better loan spell at Doncaster, and a prolific temporary stay at Birmingham, Macheda left United for Cardiff City, but struggled to win regular first-team honours for the Bluebirds, from whom he was briefly loaned to Nottingham Forest.

A free agent, Macheda will hope a return to his native Italy - where he started his career as a youngster with Lazio - will re-ignite his stuttering professional football career. His talent seems to far outweigh how his stock has fallen in recent times.
