Europa League hopes damaged in Fenerbahce

Goalscorer Roon in action

Europa League hopes for Manchester United hang very much in the balance following a bitterly disappointing 2-1 away defeat at the hands of Fenerbahce.

Jose Mourinho's men sit third in Europa League pool A, one point behind Feyenoord and the elusive, top two qualification spots. Being dumped out of the competition at this stage would be hugely disappointing for United’s new boss, in a competition his new charges have never previously won.

Moussa Sow gave the hosts a stunning start to the game with the opening goal after little over a minute, with David de Gea no match for an acrobatic overhead kick.

The Turkish outfit doubled their lead via a Jeremain Lens free-kick, with a late, stunning goal from Wayne Rooney ultimately proving just consolation, and a slight jolt to the goal difference, for United.

Europa League progression, however, is still in Manchester United's hands - with a home clash against Feyenoord and an away trip to Zorya Luhansk to come. A home loss to the Rotterdam club on 24 November could, depending on results elsewhere, prove fatal.
