Hero Heaton makes OT return with clean sheet masterclass

Superb display

Tom Heaton produced a phenomenal goalkeeping display on his return to Old Trafford, dealing with a Manchester United assault on the Burnley goal as the two Lancastrian sides played out a goalless draw at the Theatre of Dreams.

The Red Devils finished the game with 10 men, and had manager Jose Mourinho sent to the stands, on an afternoon of near misses and frustration.

Herrera saw red for a second bookable offence following a challenge on Dean Marney, whilst Mourinho allowed his temper to flare over during the half-time break, as United failed to find a way past Heaton despite dominating proceedings for long periods of Saturday's game.

United amassed a whopping 72% of possession, and had 37 shots with 11 on target, and threw 19 corners at their county neighbours. The Clarets, meanwhile, had seven shots with one on target, and a single corner - but produced a brave, determined and resolute defensive display to hang on for an unlikely point.

With penalty appeals turned down, and pressure failing to pay dividends, Heaton's heroics should be a reminder to England boss Gareth Southgate as to his Three Lions credentials. A three minute cameo appearance against Australia is Heaton's only international appearance to date, but his display at Old Trafford was world class.

A stunning, acrobatic stop to deny Zlatan Ibrahimovic was arguably the best of Heaton’s collection of saves, with United’s Swedish striker notching up 12 attempts on the Burnley goal, only to be continuously thwarted.

30-year-old Heaton never registered a senior appearance during his time with United, though his impressive performances with the reserve team and out on loan deserved more of a look from the Red Devils hierarchy.

United sit eighth in the Premier League table, having failed to score in their last three Premier League outings; bagging only two goals in five domestic fixtures for October. Burnley, meanwhile, grab their first away point of the Premier League campaign.
