Manchester United bounced back from their Premier League humiliation at Chelsea, with a fabulous League Cup fourth round victory over bitter rivals City, with Juan Mata Garcia’s goal settling the tie at Old Trafford.

The Spaniard broke the deadlock nine minutes after the interval, to send the Red Devils into the last eight at the expense of the holders, booking a home tie against West Ham United in the process.

Jose Mourinho was rewarded, and won favour with supporters, for fielding a strong starting XI, whilst City were made to pay for disrespecting the competition and fielding a weakened side, making a total of nine changes.

Kelechi Iheanacho went close for City with a near-range header, but Pep Guardiola's charges offered little attacking threat, and City's run of six matches without a win is their boss' worst in professional management.

Mata, meanwhile, boosted his claim for a regular starting berth under Mourinho, as he fired home an impressive, low finish from a corner following a flick from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, whom redeemed himself somewhat after a quiet opening half.

A tense affair, the visitors failed to register a single shot on target and United took advantage. The League Cup must always be regarded as a hugely important competition - and Mourinho must prioritise adding to his three wins in the tournament to date.

Full Time – Manchester United 1-0 Manchester City
Attendance – 75,196
