Europa League progression for Manchester United is far from in the bag, but took a huge leap towards reality, as the Red Devils thumped Fenerbahce 4-1 at Old Trafford.

Former United marksman Robin van Persie scored on his return to the Theatre of Dreams, but his goal proved scant consolation as the home side comfortably beat their Turkish visitors.

Paul Pogba hit back at his critics with two of the goals for Jose Mourinho's men. He broke the deadlock from the penalty spot, the world’s most expensive player dispatching from 12 yards after Simon Kjaer brough down Juan Mata.

Only moments later, with 34 minutes on the clock, Anthony Martial had a go from the spot, as United won a near-identical penalty. Sener Ozbayrakli conceded the penalty this time, as United doubled their lead.

Pogba put the result beyond reasonable doubt moments before the break with a fine curling effort, before Jesse Lingard gave his first-team credentials a boost with another long-range strike.

The result leaves United on six points, in second spot to Feyenoord, who beat Mourinho's men in the Netherlands. Zorya Luhansk, on one point, look unlikely to progress; meaning it looks set to be two from three between United, their Dutch rivals and Fenerbahçe for a place in the knock-out stages.
