Disciplined United frustrate Liverpool at Anfield

Typical moment

Manchester United produced a disciplined defensive display to claim a goalless draw in an uninspiring Premier League clash with Liverpool.

Despite much pre-match excitement, this Annfield clash ultimately failed to deliver.

However, with Liverpool looking to go top with three points, Jose Mourinho is likely to be the happier manager with a point. His defensive line-up Valencia, Bailly, Smalling and Blind subscribed to a classic Mourinho philosophy of defensive organisation and stubbornness.

Many reminiscing of classic Anfield away wins of yesteryear, sections of the travelling Red Army may have been unconvinced by United’s approach, which emphasised the impact Mourinho has had on his new charges. Equally, however, this cannot be regarded as a bad result in anybody’s book.

The hosts almost snatched a win at the death before Antonio Valencia made a stunning last-gasp tackle to deny Robert Firmino, whilst David de Gea was by far the busier goalkeeper.

Zlatan Ibrahimovich’s misjudged header was about as good as it got in front of goal for United, but as an impressive Ander Herrera kept Liverpool under constant pressure in midfield, Mourinho will feel that this was a point well earned for the Red Devils.

Full Time - Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United
Attendance - 52,769
