Match abandoned as Commissioner labels scenes a 'fiasco'

Bomb disposal leave OT

Manchester United’s final Premier League game of the season was abandoned prior to kick-off, after a suspect package was found in a toilet at the ground.

According to reports, Security Search Management & Solutions Ltd (SSMS) had been hired to use fake bombs to test sniffer dogs - but a device was left behind.

Supporters were initially evacuated from the Stretford End and Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, before the game itself was abandoned 15 minutes after its previously-scheduled kick-off time.

Following initial relief as to the safety of spectators following the incident, as more detailed have emerged, the events have been labelled a “fiasco” by Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd.

The abandonment has caused great inconvenience to many supporters, including those who travelled from the south coast to follow AFC Bournemouth.

The fixture has been hastily re-arranged for Tuesday evening, with United anticipated to make a raft of changes ahead of the weekend’s FA Cup Final. United have refunded all tickets for the fixture, and allowed ticket holders from both clubs to watch the re-arranged contest free of charge. Season ticket holders will also be given credit.

The re-arranged fixture is likely to have a largely subdued atmosphere. United will climb to fifth with a point, but would need a 19-0 win to grapple the final Champions League qualification spot away from Manchester City.

The visitors, meanwhile, can climb has high as 14th in the table with a positive result. Hopes of a quick return to Europe’s elite competition came grinding to a halt as Manchester City grabbed a point at Swansea in a 1-1 draw. Elsewhere, on the final day of the season, shock champions Leicester drew at Chelsea, whilst Spurs, remarkably, finished third in a two-hour race after suffering a 5-1 humbling at Newcastle.
