Austin strikes as lifeless United lose 2016 unbeaten run

Under pressure

The pressure is mounting on Louis van Gaal as Manchester United suffer their first defeat of 2016 - a disappointing home reverse at the hands of Southampton.

Charlie Austin's header settled the contest, with the former QPR frontman coming off the bench to nod home the only goal of the game.

United were booed off the pitch as they slipped to a sixth league defeat of the season, in a result which ended a five-match unbeaten run, which included last weekend's win at Anfield.

It was a largely lifeless performance from the Red Devils who, too often under van Gaal, lack attacking intent or ambition. A single shot on target during the 90 minutes was testimony to that.

The Red Devils return to action on Friday evening at Derby County in the FA Cup.

Full Time - Manchester United 0-1 Southampton
Attendance - 75,408
