United in talks to sign Palace defender?

Nathaniel Clyne

United are in advanced talks concerning a move for Crystal Palace’s Nathaniel Clyne, according to the Manchester Evening news. The Red Devils are thought to be on the verge of completing a £3million move for the defender, but the deal could yet hit a snag.

Clyne was in excellent form at Old Trafford earlier in the season as Crystal Palace staged an upset and dumped United out of the Carling-sponsored League Cup.

The 20-year-old has already made 124 appearances for the Eagles and has played a big role in ensuring Palace boasts one of the Championship’s meanest defences this season.

United are thought to be eager to tie up a deal for approximately £3million – but there remains debate over when the player would make the switch from Selhurst Park to Old Trafford.

Palace, who currently lead Cardiff City 1-0 in the Carling Cup semi-final, want to hold onto the player and would be horrified to lose him at this stage of the season.

Clyne’s contract expires in the summer – and it looks likely he will leave Palace. But, as the player is under 21, Palace will receive compensation if he does move on, meaning they are in no rush to finalise any deal with the Red Devils.

The player was recently shortlisted to be involved in Stuart Pearce’s Team GB at the 2012 Olympic Games.
